My previous M81 and M82 images were undersampled so decided to 2x Drizzle process the subs in PixInsight to see if I could pull out more detail. The end result for M81 is not too bad. M82 could have done with more subs and less cloud/moonlight (and a wider crop)...

Never happy with processing results so I redid these two galaxy images. Maybe better? Maybe not?
I think I'll throw M82 in the garbage and shoot new subs w/o cloud and moonlight!!

Very nice job Brian. I don't think I have seen a shot of M82 that close here before. Did you use a Barlow lens?

Now wait a minute...
Very nice!
But aren't you the guy that told me not to be so fast about throwing away files?

Yup, that was me AND I decided to give it one more try. This time I used Registax to align and stack the subs. I can almost live with this result...

No Barlow used. In fact I used a 0.6x reducer on the AT8RC to get a 960mm focal length (and an acceptable f/4.8).

Yeah that's a push between power and f/stops. And your new stacks really clean up the shot.

Nice!
Now then, aren't we all glad you kept those files?

For the sake of completeness (consistency? curiosity?) I've reprocessed M81 in Registax as well...
I prefer my previous version.

I hope to be able to do as well as this someday when I grow up:
http://www.astrobin.com/293940/B/?real=&nc=Sky-JennersdorfI first saw this image on DPReview.com. The creator of this image is Michael S, who lives in Austria. He did this with a 10" newton reflector and a Nikon D5300a plus about 4.5 hours of integration time. I find this image just jaw dropping in what he was able to do. I've looked at his other images, and this is no accident. I don't think we needed Hubble. Just supply Michael the RA-Dec that they want to see, and turn him loose. Click on M82 and watch it go large!
