I have used non own batteries on all me Canon cameras without incident, however your piece of mind is worth spending the extra money.

Worth more than solid, successful experience?

Thank you everyone! Lots of differing opinions on all suggestions that I researched. Decided to go with Watson from B&H, as I deal with them for all my camera needs. I never knew there were so many battery options! Glad I asked!

Most likely there's only one option - Sanyo, who makes almost all of them. They've recently been acquired by Panasonic.

They won't last half as long as real Canon batteries. Stick with OEM Canon batteries. I've bought some of the cheapies and they don't last as long, and half of them wouldn't even take a charge after using just a couple of times.

What brand, pray tell. Half of them?

Batteries are one of those items that really does not have an OEM mfr. They are all MFR by a third party with the camera/compuer/cell phone makers putting their brand on the battery. All rechargeable batteries have a specified number of charges that they will take before they start losing there performance. This includes partial charges. As I mention in the previous post on third party batteries I purchased a BP511A for my canon 50D in Bejing in 2008. I negotiated the price from $100.00 dollars down to $25.00 dollars. In china you can negotiate the price as long as it is not a gov. run store. The battery gives me the same performance as the so called OEM battery. As the last post was progressing I searched for the price of the BP511A and found quite a range from $5.00 dollars on Amazon to $50.00 Plus dollars on B&H and other online camera stores. Buy what you are comfortable with and just remember that replacement batteries for anything that uses batteries will not be OEM unless you go back to the place of purchase and good luck with that as most places will not stock replacement batteries. Car/Truck batteries is a good example. If you go to the dealer for your car battery they will tell you that they will have to order it from the MFR of the car/truck and there will probably be a wait time of 2 days to 7 days and charge you a 150 to 200% mark up from what you would pay at autozone, PepBoys, Etc.

I have purchased batteries for Canon cameras at Amazon for 3 different cameras. I like the user ratings to find the best battery, most I have purchased have more mah than the canon origional and seem to keep the charge longer. I also purchased an oem charger, forget it, Canon charger works much better.

I buy all my batteries on Ebay and never had a problem. Just purchased 4 batt. for my camera and a charger, only 28 dollars and free shipping. same amp hours as Canon, and they seem to be working fine. I'll see how they hold a charge as time goes on.

I am shooting a lot of live view now because of bad eyesight, and batteries are being eaten up. I have a Canon 7D. B&H sells the 7D battery LC-E6 for $67. I just saw some LP-E6 batteries on Amazon for just $25 with the claim that they fit the 7D. Do you think it is safe to buy the cheaper batteries? I'm on a tight budget, but don't want to risk harming the camera.
Thanks in advance.

The only problem I think you may have is a false reading on the charge left in the battery.
Ray.

Letting the battery discharge completely and recharging fully, doing that three or four times, and the battery very often will give you proper readings again.

I thought it was because it didn't have a "chip" in it that the Canon batteries had. Other than that,I have no problems with the after market batteries. I have two Canon and one aftermarket battery that I use with my 60D and 7D.

As I have stated before Wassabi batteries are safe to use. I have two sets of two batteries with chargers that only cost $25.00 Free Shipping. These batteries work in many Canon camera's 7D,7D mk2, 5D, 5Dmk2,3,4.

I have a 3rd party battery in my camera bag and it works fine with my Canon. However I never set out for an extended shoot without having both batteries fully charged. The 3rd party battery is like my car's spare tire. It's good to know it is there, but I hope I never need to use it. DJM

I use Wasabi Power batteries in my 6D and 7DII, and have for about 3 years. No problems. The newest Wasabi batteries actually have a 2600mAh rating compared to 1865mAh for the Canon LP-E6N (extended life version that came out with the 7DII).
For two years now Wasabi has advertised that their batteries and chargers were 100% interchangeable with Canon. Before the batteries worked in the camera but the chargers had to be used with the brand. Now it doesn't matter which battery goes in which charger.

2 Wasabi batteries and a charger are $29.99 on Amazon. There is a package with a two battery charger but it is USB to charge off a computer and is slower than the plug in charger.

7D will use the newer batteries, in fact the 6D, 7D, 7DII, 60D, 70D, 80D and the 5D series all use the same batteries.

And best of all, the Wasabi batteries come with an accessory bag of horseradish!
