Patterns in the Ice

The other day a friend of mine who has a Kitfox airplane took me for a local area flight over the Knik Glacier, southeast of Palmer. It was a beautiful day and the glacier was glorious. As we were flying over the foot of the glacier, I saw these patterns in the ice and quickly grabbed a shot. I have to tell you, shooting pictures from inside a very small plane isn't easy!! I liked this for the colors of the ice, the contrast and textures.

The arctic is famous for the Bermuda Triangle like losses of planes... just disappear in the ice and snow... many never seen again. I recall perhaps 60 years ago a congressman or senator was lost, no traces of his plane. I do not want to take the romance from your photos by saying "... In ice, the absorption of light at the red end of the spectrum is six times greater than at the blue end." so I will not say it! oops, I did!

Many times in UHH I have been forced to go on a tangent hunt to know why something IS. The source of the Blue Ice comment:

Planes gone missing without a trace dot Alaska's aviation history ...

With out modern devices it would be so easy for a pilot to get lost in never ending, never quiet, miles after miles of sameness. Your photos are of areas that most of us will never see. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your comments. And your are absolutely correct. In fact, just a few miles up from where I took those pictures was where an Air Force C123 Globemaster flew into a mountain side in, I believe, 1952. Over the years it was covered up by ice and snow, and just a few years ago, it was "discovered" again, and the Air Force has been spending a lot of time recovering remains of the occupants as well as parts of the aircraft deemed necessary. That's pretty close to where we live. The other one you mentioned was When Congressman Nick Begich and Senator Hale Boggs disappeared going over toward Whittier from the Portage side. Actually, they weren't going to Whittier, specifically, but to a destination beyond, where, I don't remember. But there was a massive search that never found anything. I think the plane made it over the pass, went over Whittier, and then, in bad weather, went into the ocean and sunk. It's deep out there in the Gulf of Alaska, is it's no wonder they were never found. There is a conspiracy theory that this was the result of some sort of FBI plot or other plot to eliminate Boggs for some of the work he'd done. Begich was, unfortunately, merely collateral damage. Yes, the glaciers are beautiful, but can be deadly.

There is no end to the figures I see in both photos, but especially the first one. What a psychologist could do with that photo to analyze someone could easily get anyone condemned.

Not with me; I lost my mind years ago when Scotty failed to beam me up. I can only assume he had a good drunk on at the time and missed my call.

Thank you. That was one of those spur of the moment shots as we were flying over the glacier, and it caught my eye.
