Anyone have any help repairing a Coolscan 5000. It doesn't communicate on the USB any more, and no one seems willing to take it on.

If Windows 10, try Viewscan.

VueScan also works for me on my iMac.

I have used VueScan from the start. It worked fine until a few months ago then stopped communicating. Changed cables, changed computers. Nothing recognizes the scanner although USBview does recognize that something is plugged in. I believe the scanner is dead. I was looking for repair possibilities.

I have a Nikon 8000 that seems to have the same problem, although I stayed with the original Nikon software combined with a Mac G5. The Mac was purchased a year ago via Bay after another died. I was told that some IC board in the scanner often goes bad. Since new film scanners aren't made anymore, I'm trying to find a repair service. I do plan on using VueScan when I can get the computer to recognize the scanner!

There is a repair facility for Coolscans advertised on eBay. Just search eBay for Nikon Coolscan and you will find it.

I have had numerous USB communication problems with my Nikon Coolscan IV over the years whenever I changed versions of Windows. My suggestion is to search the internet for a more recent driver version. Good luck. (BTW: these scanners and software produce incredible results!)

It does sound like the scanner. If you uninstalled the scanner software or plugged the scanner into a pc with no scanner software installed then plug and play would have attempted to install a driver for it had it been successful communicating with it. And I see it's USB only so networking it is not an option. I'm not sure what OS you're using but you may want to check this link about firmware if you haven't already done so. Good luck with it.
