Hi everyone, I have been viewing UHH for a couple of months now, but this is my first posting. I am about to take my camera equipment in a camera backpack as a carry-on onto a plane flight from Ohio to Florida. I will be going on my first cruise from there (but that has questions within that subject for another posting). I have never went through TSA with camera equipment before. What things should I do or not do to go through the terminal AND on the plane? Will the scanners damage anything? Are there restrictions on anything? ...etc. I will be packing in my carry-on, my Nikon 7200 and 3300 bodies; 18-300 lens, 50 mm and 85 mm prime lenses; speed light, extra batteries, memory cards, etc.

For digital equipment, no problem. They may want to remove the lens, or have you click the shutter. Otherwise, it should be no problem. Just make sure that you never get separated from, or loose sight of, your backpack. I've traveled with my Nikon D700, and three lenses a number of times. The interaction with the agents have been different with each. However, if the pack will fit beneath the seat, preferable, or in the overhead, you'll have no problem.

Thanks Bob. I am kind of nervous about this. My pack SHOULD fit under my seat.

Good luck Papa I have not had any issues in the past so you should be good. After my last trip I bought a pelican case with rollers which supposedly will fit into the overhead. I am hoping it works. Have fun on your cruise. Ours leaves Friday from Tampa.

Oh and as you get on the boat there will be another security point to go through. That should not be an issue either. Unless of course you have a few bottles of wine in your case.

I carry all kinds of photography and computer gear on flights on a weekly basis...I can't remember the last time they hand inspected my camera gear. Now my laptop, that's a different story. Every now and then it gets swabbed.

I've flown with cameras a number of times. Each time they took every body, every lens and every accessory out of the bag. They removed caps and looked through long lenses. I was always impressed by how carefully they handled everything. Each piece was replaced to the spot it came from.

The only small delay was when I was told I couldn't take an Allen wrench on board. I told him to toss it. The agent tried every which way to avoid just throwing it out.

Thanks Michael. Our cruise leaves March 2nd from Orlando for a three day trip to Nassau. I was going to replace my lenses with bottles of wine, guess I won't now...lol.

Just be sure not to have any loose batteries in your checked bags and that any batteries in your carry-on are either in their devices, unopened packaging (such as spare AA's) or have their protective covers in place. It's also handy to put them all in zip lock bags for easy inspection. They don't want to see loose batteries with exposed contacts.

My camera bag is small enough I can place it under the seat in front of me. It makes it a bit cramped for leg room but I just dont trust that someone won't knock it out of the overhead bin. I've never had a problem with going thru security.

You'll be fine as long as your camera bag fits in the overhead or under your seat. Do not ever check camera equipment as luggage as it probably will be stolen or damaged. We've all seen the baggage handlers throwing pieces of luggage from the plane onto the ground. It's no big deal if an agent wants to inspect something, just don't lose sight of any of your gear. Their scanners can't hurt anything digital.

Hi PapaJohnny, I travel often with my camera gear in a backpack which fits under my seat. Never travel with more than one camera body with attached lens and one more lens. I have never encountered any problems with the airlines, X-ray machines, etc. Have a great time!

Every once in a while the airline will weigh your carry-on. Make sure it's less than 18 lb. Also if you have a tripod they might give you a hard time for having something "loose" that will cause trouble. After much grief with an international carrier, I now check my travel tripod in the checked baggage, so far no problem. Have a great trip!

Good luck Papa Johnny you should have no problems through security and based on your contents the pack will fit easily under your seat or the seat in front of you if available. I prefer the seat in front so l can see it. Enjoy your trip and bring back the pics

I frequently fly with my gear. I called the TSA in Tampa and this is what I was told. When leaving from Tampa (TPA), I removed the battery from my camera, and packed it with my other 2 (with the battery cover that covers the contacts on each battery) into a zip lock bag. I also placed my memory cards into a second zip lock. I left the two zip locks in the front pouch of my camera pack until I got to security and then place them into the basket along with my wallet, keys and change. I placed the camera bag (with all of the compartments unzipped and open) on the x-ray belt. The TSA at the x-ray took the basket ( I think it went though the x-ray but I'm not sure as I was getting searched as my stuff went in. By the time I was finished walking through the magnetometer and getting hand searched, one of the TSA officers was standing with my camera bag, basket and shoes at the other end of the x-ray. He set everything at the end of the table so I could repack it and left to help others. It was really no big deal. I had 2 cameras, 5 lenses, the Vello camera release and it's controller, batteries, memory cards and other photo related stuff in the bag. The guards in Tampa were friendly and helpful. NOTE: I was flying on a Thursday and it was 9:00 am. Not very busy and only 5 or 6 of us going through that particular screening, so that may have been part of the benefit. Had they been backed up and busy, it might have been more difficult or different.
