Calvin Hollywood sharpening technique using surface blur...

Not long ago a great thread was created here. The admin froze it in the gallery which is too bad. This is why I post this here, again, under an informative/sort of tutorial.

I was not aware of the technique used for sharpening and looked it up.

I do not know how it works with other software than PS CC but I am sure there is something similar.

This was created by Calvin Hollywood, from Germany. Note this not new since it was first published in 2012.

Basically this technique use layers, a group and blend modes.

It is surprisingly effective.

Download the 'original' to check the difference between before and after. Flip between the two.

You basically take an image, duplicate it twice (Ctrl-J * 2) select these two layers and place them in a group (Name that thing whatever you like).

Set the group blend mode to overlay.
Open the group. Select the top layer. Set the blend mode to 'Vivid light'. Invert the layer (Crt-I). Convert this layer to smart object (more flexible this way).

Select the filter 'Blur surface' and adjust. Use your own number there and experiment. Note that is you select more than 20 in the threshold you will get a hallow around objects so you may want to avoid doing that.

There is no more to it.

This is very interesting. I'm always looking for different ways to sharpen a picture or part of a picture.

I did something a bit different to compare your two versions. On your first picture I opened the download. I then opened a new page in my browser and looked at history to open your page again. I then opened your second download. I can change the size of my browser windows and make them match and then slide them around to compare the two. This is a quick way without downloading and opening in another program to compare. Might be a different way for people to compare images on the web.
