Mini Theme: Stata Center, M.I.T.

Some shots of the Stata Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This houses the Computer, Information and Intelligence Sciences Depts at MIT. It was designed by famed architect Frank Gehry who also designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA. Gehry himself described the Center as buildings having a frat party. One of the goals of the design was to encourage interaction between departments and groups. Apparently, this happens a lot as people get lost in the complicated layout and bump into people they would otherwise never meet.
Comments and suggestions always appreciated.

Good photos of a hideous structure designed by someone who doesn't know how to do something good. This architect has conned the world into thinking that random lines and pieces stuck on everywhere constitute good architecture.

Good photos. Wretched architecture. Used to walk by there several times a week. Why?

Thanks for looking frjack. I know the architecture may not be everybody's cup of tea but its an interesting place to shoot.

Obviously a good place to shoot. There was an article in the Boston Globe back when I was in Boston noting that the building is plagued with leaks when it rains heavily, a not uncommon event in Boston. I am willing to be that snow melt is also a problem. Sometimes the building is less about function and need and entirely about the architect's ego.

The Architect was sued for $15 million. There were some leaks, a lot of issues regarding sliding snow and ice. The Architect claimed the owner 'value engineered' the snow brakes out of the project. The biggest issue was leaking and breaking up of the paved amphitheater over the auditorium which is one of the more mundane aspects of the project. The case was settled out of court.
