Why do you feel you need a certificate that you have to renew every 3 years to prove you are a good photographer?

To hang it on the wall and impress your clients with it, I suppose.
Then again, you may just as well design and print up your own "certificate".

You join their organization and pay your dues/fees. Ever stop doing that and they jerk your certification. And of course at that point you forget everything your ever knew about photography and you gear all evaporates, or maybe not.

I remember my Dad, an electrical engineer, got into a book called " Who's Who in Engineering". If he didn't pay every year, he would not be in the next copy of the book. If your work sells, then your a professional, if it doesn't sell, your not a professional, it is that easy to tell the pro from the rest.

You would start by checking out their site, which Mogul posted. A friend of mine, who just celebrated his 40th year as a studio owner, is a member and holds several degrees from them. I know he gets called upon to judge professional competitions. He is also quite successful in his work and is more knowledgeable about photography then anyone I have ever met. I don't know if any of that has anything to do with his membership in the PPA, but it certainly does not seem to have hurt him.

I have two friends with the PPA credentials. You work you ass of to prove you know your shit across the spectrum to get certified.

And some people think that just a high school education is all you need to get a job.

OP ask, how does one get this
My suggestion is- Start your Microsoft Publisher program. Design one for yourself and about yourself. Save, print to 94 white heavy paper and display proudly.

I am a member of that organization. They have very aggressive marketing, professional development and educational programs and resources. They have certification programs and degree programs that many members avail themselves of. They also have very active forums, with participants ranging from complete newbies to real working or retired professionals, all of whom are willing to share their experience and knowledge. They are actively moderated sites, and discourteous and unprofessional conduct is strictly forbidden, unlike the wild west carnival side show that goes on in this forum. It's a great professional community, and it costs $220/yr if you opt for their indemnity coverage, otherwise it's $180/yr.

That being said, the question is why do you feel you need this? Send me a PM with some details about your interests, goals and motivation and I'll be happy to discuss this with you.
