I would think with all the other technology in vehicles they should be able eliminate cell signal in a moving vehicle. There are already laws against texting in a moving vehicle and you see how impressed people are with them.

The problem with that is, What about a passenger who want's to make a call? Hit texting while driving hard, like DWI, and a huge fine.

If the manufacturers of smart phones could just deactivate the texting function at 20mph or faster (using the GPS of the phone) texting would not be possible. I know, all passengers could not as well. Big deal. Use the phone as a phone. This will not stop surfing the net or browsing Facebook. But, I would hope it could stop a few of the above accidents. Just my humble opinion.

Yes! He was driving home from having the conversion done, and was texting his friends about it.

In the 60s while driving the 36 miles from Orange County to Santa Monica to go to work it was very common to see women with their heads close to the mirror putting on make-up, and men reading the newspaper propped on the front of the steering wheel.
Texting isn't the problem, it's the drivers.

The more I think about it, having greater intelligence in the cars computers is the way to go. Too many drivers brains are up-and-locked most times, just like the landing gear on an aircraft, not being used......

Just wait till autonomous vehicles are prevalent. Don't be surprised at what people will do in their cars while moving then.

Given that distracted driving is so endemic, that only defensive driving holds promise of living through driving. My first steps are to avoid the busiest streets and assume all other drivers are distracted. One partial solution would to mandate that every car have an ignition shutdown when a device powers up. But devices are not the only distractions.

A Corvette doesn't have a back seat.

But there is a little space behind front seats. Head would fit there.
