My family and I took '66 from Detroit-Chicago-El Cajon, CA in November 1944 (wartime) when I was 10 years old. You would drive for hours and never see another car (ah, the good old days!). It was a 2/3 lane road, not flat, but moved up and down. We got stopped somewhere in the rain by a cattle crossing (bear in mind '66 was a major transcontinental highway). I remember the gas pumps: some had a 10-gallon glass container on top, which you would fill up with as many gallons as you wanted (you had to do this) and then pump it in the car. If you were using Ethel, the gas was pink. Ration stamps. Food and motels were as the pictures you have probably seen show. We did not have a still camera but a movie camera; I have movies of parts of the trip, now digitized. Almost got caught in the snow in Mountaineer, NM, but made it down safely. God, what a 10-day trip it was! I had chickenpox that didn't bother me at all. Unfortunately, I'm the only one left from that trip. Have a great time (I think AAA has trips along '66 booklets you can get).

A quick Google search found this site that you may find useful. Shows starting the route from Ca or Il.

I've been told that tourist drivers steal all the road signs on Route 66, that they no longer replace them anymore. The paved roads are painted as substitutes now.

Find a book called "Ghost Towns of Route 66" by Jim Hinckley. It mentions several towns right off the new interstate and relatively easy to find. I got a lot of good photos in those towns. If you get into Tucumcari, NM look up the Blue Swallow motel. That is really a trip back to the 50s. There is also a Route 66 museum in Oklahoma that was fun to visit.

I cannot speak for the rest of the country but in Illinois Rt 66 roughly follows I-55 from St Louis to Chicago. In the last few years they have been putting up road signs on the many secondary roads that used to be the original route. There are many museums along the route and several of the original buildings and attractions still exist. The photos I have included are of a restored service station in the small town of Mt Olive, IL. Enjoy your trip

Actually, almost all of 66 from Tulsa to Joplin is readily accessible. There are some nice areas to shoot along the road, especially in the towns. A word of caution is that from OKC to Tulsa, while much of the route is there, there are many wooded areas that are both part of the landscape and are also obstructive. Most of the road is good and it best driven by a photographer at 55 than 65. Sunsets in Oklahoma may not be always dramatic, but in late summer the dust in the air and higher humidities will give the evening skies a nice color cast and some subtle color.

We did Chicago to Oklahoma City this year and plan to pick up from there next year. There are different eras of Rte 66, so you really should do some research online. There are multiple books available that will give you turn by turn directions also. There still exists some 85 - 90% of the original road from some era. You may find yourself on the designated route from 1926-1930 and then other roads were built for 1930-1950 and so on. It really depends on what interests you. There are abandoned businesses, refurbished businesses, and all types of touristy things to see. There were turkey tracks from 1926 still visible in the cement in southern Illinois, 1920's style gas stations, museums and unique buildings. The people along this route were wonderful and extremely helpful. Research as much as you can to get the best trip that suits your style and tastes.
