I would like to purchase a good quality (at reasonable price) 2x teleconverter for use with my 55-300mm lens on a Nikon D5100. Any suggestions?

The Nikon teleconverters will not work on that lens, only the pro-level lenses. I don't know about other makes.

Don't do it. AF will not work with an effective aperture darker than 5.6 and a 2X converter (even if it did fit) would make it f11.

The "no free lunch" concept certainly applies to teleconverters.

But Sarge, the camera body has nothing to do with it. Same answer for the $8000.00 D3X.

Worth a look...
With the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter full autofocus (AF) functioning is possible with lenses having a maximum aperture of f/4 or brighter. Having 1.4x magnification, the Teleplus PRO 300 is constructed of 5 multi-coated elements in 4 groups and allows a depth of field 1/1.4 of the prime lens used and retains the prime's minimum focusing distance.

The Teleplus PRO 300 has genuine Gate Array IC, which means that not only the converter's own data but all data sent from the camera body provide full exposure metering and electronic flash photography.

B&H has it for a good price - $115/$130.

I found the same thing. You'd better buy fast before B&H "corrects" their price.

Well, you can still manually focus with the converter !

Sorry, I forgot to say - I recommend Tamron converters for their price/performance.

I have a lot of Tamaron converters around. They will slow up the lens a bit and reduce the light, but otherwise seem fine. But the result of putting a 2x on a 150 lens is not going to be the same as shooting a 300mm lens.

You are.

I mean, you can try an off-brand, but five bucks says you will hate it.
