Both lens are good lenses.

Depending on your camera one may work better than the other for you though.

D lenses have an APERTURE ring that allows you to set the aperture, G lenses can only set the aperture with the camera command dials.

D lenses are older where G lenses are newer lenses for the latest dslrs.

Youtube has some great videos on both of these lenses. Which Nikon camera do you have?

Both are very good. So is the 1.8 version for much less money.

The G will not work on cameras requiring a manual aperture ring. It will mount but there is no control.
Optically both are excellent. and will work just fine on your model of camera.

The D gives you the same Optical quality as the G. At a much lesser price. The D will work fine on the D 800. No point in buying the G.

I own the 85mm 1.4 G. It is a great portrait lens. Never used the D version.

James,

I have the older 85mm f1.4D IF and love it. Its one of the best portrait lens I ever use. The only lens better for portraits is my 135mm DC. The D is solid well made and super sharp.

With that said my buddy has the newer 85mm f1.4G. We agreed his lens focus faster and is a lot lighter. That's because it made from plastic. Rumor is the G is sharper but we can't tell the difference.

We are running D600, D800s & D4s.
Hope this helps

Is there a reason that you need the f1.4 rather than the f1.8? I understand that the f1.8 is an outstanding lens for a lot less money.
