I always shoot with Nikon & would never change due to all my Nikon lenses but I wonder why Nikon cameras are so much noisier when hitting the shutter release? I was taking photos today along with a bunch of other photographers & you could hardly hear their cameras when they hit the shutter release.I shoot with a Nikon D 7100 & a D 5100.I have tried the quiet button on the selector but it's not that quiet. Are the more expensive Nikon cameras as noisy as mine?

Were the others shooting mirrorless cameras? The noise you hear when you hit the shutter release isn't from the shutter, but from the mirror going up and down.
My D750 IS more quiet than my previous DX Nikon. I certainly don't know why. Tech changes or quality improvements? Who knows, but it is more quiet.

Oh I didn't know that.I think most of them were shooting with Canons but I don't know what models they were.My daughter -in- law has a Canon & it isn't a real expensive one but it is still much quieter than my D 7100.
It could be quieter in live view mode.

Yes,I found that out but don't really like using live mode.

Funny, I have a Canon and think mine is the loudest around. Maybe it is just the fact that our own cameras are closer to our ears and thus the loudest.

Well the camera closest to your ear is usually your own .....so ! :)

I measured sound level with with a meter at 3 inches. My D7100 was 77dB, my D750 was 77dB, and my Panasonic GH3 was 72dB, and my Olympus E-M1 was 71 dB.
The Nikons sound the same, and measure the same.
The Nikons should louder than the micro 4/3 cameras because of different characteristics of the sound. The Nikon sound is mirror up, shutter open, shutter close, mirror down. The Panasonic sound is shutter close, shutter open, shutter close, shutter open.
When I shoot in a group with micro 4/3, I usually have to announce that I have shot because the other photographers can't hear my shutter. I can clearly hear the Nikon and Canon shooters.

M, I don't know anything about Nikons, but one weekend, I shot a sports event and shot all weekend with my 5dmkll and a 1Dx. My 7dmkll was just along as a back-up. Before the weekend was up, I got out the 7ll so I could compare it to the 1Dx.
The7ll was SOOO quiet I had to check it because I thought it wasn't working, even at 10 fps!!
And it was NOT even on quiet mode!!!
M, too bad you're so glassed up!
Good luck with your Nikon.

I used to have the same problem with my Leicaflex. Had to turn my hearing aid up to 8!
I never really thought about it but, you peaked my curiosity so, I just checked my 7100 and 800. The 7100 seems to be significantly quieter than the 800.
The new 810 is said to be much quieter.
Does it really bother you that much? Or are you simply curious?

At a church or sometimes other environments u can hear a pin drop, then u can certainly hear the repeated clicking of the mirror/shutter.
Sell your Nikon and buy a Canon, after all, it's the noise that makes the picture, or is it lack thereof? (oops... being sarcastic :)
