If you like wildlife photography come up north a bit to Huntington Beach State Park on Rt. 17 in Murrells Inlet. (Feel free to check my photo blog to view shots taken there)
Right across the street is world renowned Brookgreen Gardens.

Up a bit at the inlet is The Marshwalk with more photo opportunities plus great places for food and drinks.

Hi all. My wife and I are wintering in SC just below Charlotte (Fort Mill SC) for a month or month and a half. I am looking for interesting places to visit with my camera as day trips. We like parks and hiking (not too strenuous as we are in our 60s), scenic towns/villages, fun events that may be taking place, open to most anything. Would also be happy to meet up with any photographers in the area.
Thanks for your help.

Congaree [urlhttp://www.nps.gov/cong/index.htm

This place is a great place for photo ops. There is a boardwalk thru the forest and really no inclines and declines. Don't miss this place while you are there. It is worth the trip

Old Sheldon Church Ruins http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Sheldon_Church_Ruins

Close by, under 60 miles, very neat place

You're not far from the Biltmore in Asheville. The mansion, estate and botanical gardens offer great photo ops.
Also, any day drive along the Blue Ridge Pkwy is very nice!
Brevard is a great place for shoots. Lots of walking trails small water falls and creeks. Look for the legendary white squirrels while there. Then stay on hwy 64 to Highlands. You will pass by lots of waterfalls along the way.

Wow--a lot to digest. We'll sit down and plan some of these trips. Just wandered around downtown Rock Hill today.

Thanks Phil. Took a walk on your blog--great bird photos. I have seen an eagle on the lake outside our house, but only once. Here is a Great Blue Heron and a view of the small lake where we are renting.

Thanks Willie,
We have been to the zoo in Columbia with the grandkids, so I know it isn't very far away for Congaree National Park. And thanks for the parks link. I'll put the church ruins on my future list when we can get to Savannah. I've never really made a bucket list before--at 64 it is high time I started.
Regards,
Glenn

The Biltmore has had several plugs, so I'll have to put it on my definite list. We picked up a brochure about it from the NC Visitors Center with the details. Tks.

This may sound a little weird, but Carter & Holmes Orchids is located in Newberry SC, NW of Columbia and they welcome visitors to their greenhouses. This can be a lot of fun for photographers even if they're not orchid aficianados. I myself am an orchid nut and recently took a photographer friend of mine with me to visit another North Carolina orchid greenhouse. I had to DRAG him away long after I'd seen what I wanted to see there. So anyway, this could be a very fun, low-impact day trip for camera buffs. And see what else may be in the area as well. Looks to be on the edge of Sumter National Forest. This link will take you to the visitors page. http://carterandholmes.com/map.html

Thanks for the idea, not one I would have thought of. And I know my wife would certainly enjoy it.

Georgetown SC. It is the third oldest settlement in the state. Beautiful old homes, most restored, interesting marshes and bay, Spanish moss on oak trees that are hundreds of years old, etc.

Just north of there is Pawleys Island. The island itself is unique as it has avoided commercial development.

Typing this, I am wondering why we ever moved away.

There are two very scenic places within a few minutes drive of Fort Mill. First is Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens: http://www.dsbg.org/ which is located just south of Gastonia. Second is Landsford Canal: http://southcarolinaparks.com/landsfordcanal/introduction.aspx which may be a tiny drab for wintertime shooting however in late May, there is the largest display of spider lillies in the world visible from the park.

Tks for the suggestion Boilermaker. I'll add that to a growing list.

Take I85 south from Charlotte, turn right anywhere between Charlotte and the Georgia line and you will find great places to take photos and to stop and eat. Lots of lakes, waterfalls, mountains, horses and a visit to Greenville , SC is a must if you like shops and neat places to eat. Main street is lined with trees, sidewalk restaurants, shops and a beautiful river park. The area around Clemson University is all small towns, mountains, and water. If that's not enough to keep you busy, you've got Asheville and western NC which is equally beautiful. (I had to put that in as I'm a nativeTarheel. ) Also as mentioned earlier, there's always the beaches and the low country SC. Hope you enjoy your stay in the Carolinas and come back often.
