Elements 12 or Light Room 5???

It is my understanding that PSE 12 and LR 5 have the exact same ACR processing tool. I always shoot one card JPEG and one card RAW (NEF) so I have an easy choice in editing options. I have PSE 12 and LR 4 and almost always open and process images in PSE 12. That is where most images go anyway for completion and printing. If I were processing hundreds of images daily LR would be the way to go because of it's superior organizer but as I am a hobbyist and only process perhaps a couple hundred a month it's easier for me to cut out the LR step as I can do the same edits, and more, in Elements.

Both are great programs, however, your search for the best RAW converter makes this an easy choice. ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) is a great tool, but not available in Elements (Elements does have a version, but not the full blown version). The only way to get the best, latest version, you must purchase the full Photoshop Suite or Lightroom. Lightroom is the cheapest path by far. I upgraded to PSE11 and purchased LR4 at the same time. I got LR4 because of a great package deal with the purchase of a new camera. I honestly thought I would only use it for RAW conversion, then finish production in PSE11. Since I've learned LR, I almost never use PSE11.

 agreed, my thoughts exactly. I also recommend Lightroom in conjunction with Elements. LR will handle most of your needs very well. I rarely find the need for Elements but you will need it for layers.

Thanks for the reply Ebrunner, I'm aware of the discounts and unfortunately, I don't qualify. I'm hoping for some steep discounts on Black Friday.

Thanks for the reply Frank47. That's kinda my thoughts on upgrading "every other" introduction. I do the same with Windows

I agree with most of what's been written above, my suggestion is that if you can afford to by both, then do so. LR and PSE work seamlessly together and provide a great workflow.

Thanks everyone for all the good information. Now I'm going to look for a good price on LR5 and possibly keep using my Elements 10 but I like the advances in Elements 12.

My goal has been to do the bulk of the tuning (color & detail) in RAW then convert to JPG/TIFF for the final editing.

I have a new camera now that takes photos in RAW format so I'm looking for a RAW editor. I presently have Elements 10 that doesn't offer much for editing RAW and therefore will be looking at what else is available.

As Black Friday approaches I'll be looking to upgrade my Elements 10 or begin with LR 5. Any recommendations out there?

Hi Wilderness,
I use both LR5 & PSE12 and really enjoy both of them.

You should call Adobe for their new rate. There is a new subscription photoshop and lightroom for $10/per month. You have to subscribe before the new year.

I'm a teacher and I got a different price. That might make a difference to you. What I did was subscribe to Photoshop CC. (creative Cloud). You get the latest version of all the Adobe programs. So, now I have LR5 and CS6. I have found that I can do the exposure and color manipulation I want to in LR5 and then if I need to do something else, I can simply load my image directly into Photoshop and go to town. I don't know Photoshop that well, so I am still learning. It works for me. Downside is that it is a monthly subscription fee ($19.99 in my case normal price is more like $49.00). Don't know if this helps you, but it is something to think about.

I don't think any of the PSE versions include RAW capabilities without first downloading the applicable and free update from Adobe

No, the raw converter come with PSE.A reason for buying PSE12 is that is that you need a RAW converter for a new model camera. I havePSE10 and ADOBE no longer supports it.

Hi, I too am only 4-5 years into Raw imaging and use Adobe CS6 and Lightroom 5 for all the work. There is a learning curve with this so be patient and read books by Scott Kelby and watch You Tube tutorials, much information is out there.
Adobe has included many features in LR 5 that will make a great photo, you will be amazed at what one can do.
On occasion you may have to go back into CS6 for special needs. You can work the different formats too, Cr2, jpg, etc. Good luck!

Lightroom and Elements work well in tandem with each other as they do not do exactly the same thing. I upgrade every other version and only a week ago installed both Lightroom 5 and Elements 12. Love them both, but if only one, I would buy Lightroom and continue to use your Elements 10 for the things Lightroom can't do.

I agree. Sense I have learned LR 4.4 it has become my primary program for PP. I kept PSE-10 to do the few things I cannot do in LR, but have found I do not use it that often any more. If were to have only one program it would be LR, and that is a statement I didn't think I would ever make! I had tried LR 3 and it was terrible, but they made huge improvements to LR 4. I haven't tried LR 5 but understand it is worth upgrading to.

Buy LR5 and keep both on your computer. They compliment each other. Your PSE10 has a raw editor built in. While you are in PSE's Organizer if you open any CR2 file it will first open in ACR. ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) in PSE is a light version of what comes in the full blown version of Photoshop. If you purchase LR5 you will get the full blown version of Photoshops ACR on steroids. The reason you want both is that LR5 can not do layering, apply filters, special effects, or text. PSE10 can!

You may qualify by simply taking a community ed class at your local Community College.

I teach community ed classes for twenty years now at the Community College in Central Oregon. Our campus book store has always considered the receipt from the CE classes to qualify for academic discounts.

On adobe products the academic discounts are large. The academic programs are full featured and not limited in any way, with the exception of occasionally not being upgradeable.

I believe some have used the CE class participation as qualifying for academic discounts on software at many vendors on the internet as well.

In our case, classes can be as low as $25 for some classes.
