Good advice for the NFL
With the start of the NFL season, perhaps all team owners should be sent the following message.....
From a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan :
"So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event...
Save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts.
Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling.
Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don't make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification.
Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage.
Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America , not you.

AMEN!!!
That pretty much says it for me.
Amen, now if they would only listen.......nothing pisses me off more than when the national anthem is messed with!!!! It should be an honor to have a voice good enough to sing it. I for one do not have such a voice.....
Agree.
TOTALLY AGREE..... thanks for the original post

Heyrob, my friend. I am a patriotic American and a proud US Navy veteran.. I'll bet we agree on more than you think. :).
Good luck on that lottery ticket. If you win how about lunch ?

Well im not an American vet but a National Anthem as great as yours should only be sung as was intended in the first place,I would assume the organisers have an e-mail address.... so let them know what you expect and insist on.
The way things ought to be! Well stated, thank you.

I'm not an American either, but have watched the anthem 'sung' by a number of artists over the years at assorted Superbowls. I can't help thinking that the vocal gymnastics alluded to in the Colonels message is nothing more than a method of disguising the fact that they can't sing with out the aid of the assorted electrical gadgets that are available in recording studios. As an English man it hurts to say this but listen to the Welsh Rugby Fans singing the Welsh national anthem at Cardif Arms Park it's passion and pride personified
This should be at ALL sporting events not just the NFL.
God Bless America and all our service men and women.
