Good News For The Country, Bad News For Republicans

Republicans in Congress have been salivating over the looming debt ceiling crisis. They were as excited as kids in a candy store, eagerly awaiting June when the debt limit would be reached and they could then once more hold the country and the rest of the world hostage to their now thoroughly discredited austerity mantra.

But, lo and behold, much to their dismay, the economy is doing well enough so that the limit won't be reached until September or October. And who knows, by then it may not happen until January or February.

So, let's see. They can't screw President Obama over the debt ceiling, they can't screw him over Benghazi. I can't wait to see what the next manufactured crisis is that they try to smear him with. Congressional Republicans are like a schoolyard bully who realizes that the kid he's picking on is smarter than he is and just humiliated him in front of the entire student body.

I agree and just the other day I heard on TV there is a number of Republican committees on the Benghaza situation. How many Republican politicians is this taking away from doing the business for the country? And where were these politicians eight years ago when our country really needed them? They were spending their time in inhancing their positions and bank accounts and seeing what they could do to discredit Obama. Shame on them, vote them out.

The economy appears to be improving; that is good. But to imply that this means the administration does not have a spending problem is like saying that a slowing in the rate of growth of a cancer means remission. We are still running giant annual deficits-the largest ever-and thus increasing our national debt. We will become Greece within our life time (I'm 76). With respect to Benghazi you clearly are not listening to the hearings. Our country should be ashamed of itself!

There is waste - incredible waste - in government spending. It is frustrating and maddening. But no country ever budget slashed their way out of debt. Spend, spend, spend, and the economy will rebound. History tells us this.

Any good news for the country is bad news for republicans. They operate totally on fear and good news tends to diminish fear.

The more money that is spent, the more money people will have to spend. When people spend, the economy will improve. Cutting takes money out of the economy. When money is taken out people have less to spend and the economy slows down.

Here's more from our Republican friends in Washington. When will the GOP supporters wake up ???

GOP Continues March to End 40-Hour Workweek

Fri. May 10, 2013

Just days after coming back from vacation, House Republicans are wasting no time pushing legislation that would hurt working families.

House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor joined Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL), sponsor of the deceptively titled “Working Families Flexibility Act” (H.R. 1406), as they paraded the bill around Capitol Hill Tuesday. The bill would upend overtime pay and end the 40-hour workweek, as we know it.

For example, under current law, hourly employees are paid time-and-a-half for hours worked over 40 hours per week. If passed, this bill would give employers the power to take those wages and put them in a pot for future time off. This means employees wouldn’t get paid for all their work in a given pay period, which is bad news for families who are already living pay check to pay check.

The GOP is trying to sell the bill as an innovative way to help American workers better balance time between family and work, but in a letter to Congress, IAM President Tom Buffenbarger makes it clear that this proposal is no friend of the middle class.

“The Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938 established the 40-hour workweek, however, its only enforcement mechanism is the requirement that employers pay a cash premium for overtime work,” said Buffenbarger. “Comp-time’ legislation would remove this obligation from employers who offer compensatory time off instead. This legislation would make it cheaper for employers to demand mandatory overtime, undermining the FLSA’s only incentive against excessive hours.”

The White House released a statement Monday threatening to veto the bill, saying the legislation, “undermines the existing right to hard-earned overtime pay, on which many working families rely to make ends meet, while misrepresenting itself as a workplace flexibility measure that gives power to employees over their own schedules.”

The bill is also opposed by many organizations that fight for workers’ rights, including AFL-CIO, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the National Employment Law Project and the National Partnership for Women and Families.

Comp time sounds like a good idea, but finding the time to use it is a huge problem. This is a another republican attack on workers. I was a teacher for thirty-six years. We were offered comp time for certain activities that we covered instead of pay. Now tell me, when can a teacher take off from a job without having to plan the lessons for a substitute? You might as well be there. I had trouble using this comp time. Our teacher's union finally made it a contractual issue that was resolved in being paid for comp time at the end of the year that was not used.

The poor job done by both Republicans and Democrats regarding the monetary crisis has caused, for the first time ever, the U.S. Dollar to NOT be the reserve currency for every country on Earth. This was the case until the waning strength of the U.S. was acted upon by China, which is now converting to its own currency as the reserve currency of choice for its country to country deals. China is a tiny economy next to ours regarding consumption, but moving away from the dollar as their reserve currency, even a little, bodes very bad tidings and is a very bad trend for our future. This, of course, happened under Obama's watch, which is causing a slippery slope in the wrong direction for the U.S. Watch, wait, and feel the repercussions.
