I have taken many sunsets, the best way for me is always use a tripod, always use a remote sutter release, next take a light meter reading, put the camera on manual mode, put the readings in the camera. Start by taking your first pic that way, then change your shutter to one stop faster. That will let less light in. I usually do it five or six times, incresing the shutter speed each time. when you get home you can add any little adjustments in photoshop..

I start out with a daylight white balance setting and adjust within that setting. I also shoot in manual mode at around f11 and can change the color by changing the shutter speed. An nd filter #2 is sometimes useful if trying to bring out dark hills or mountains. I would be using either my Nikon d90 or d300s when doing this but can get similar results with my Canon SX10.

Here are a couple sunset photos I took with my Canon 50D. I'm just learning the manual settings so both of these were shot in the "landscape" mode. The first one is from this last winter and the 2nd one I took last night.

Thank you so much! It is so cool to see all the different colors that the sunrise/sunsets offer at different times of the year.

Randy, These are gorgeous! There are so many people that do not take the time to look around and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us...they have NO idea what they are missing!

I'm particularily fond of the last 3 sunsets. For me some turn out ok and some great. Often I can't capture what I see and I find it frustrating.

I know exactly how you feel. There have been so many times when I have gone out and it was gorgeous, but what I end up with in my photos is mediocre at best.

Thanks Randy it's nice to commeriserate. I'm recently using a kodak cd83 which is a small p&s. fits great in the purse but takes very medioker pics. My nikonL20 takes better shots, better still was a 703C Kodak but alas it was stolen. My dtr has one the same make & model which froz and never recovered. Kodak was the camera name to beat for a long time. But they seem not be as good as others now. Back in the days of film I used a olympus with 35mm It was a great little camera. Oh, well, I guess it is back to reasearching for something that takes better pics. I think I'm still looking for just a better P&S not sure I'm ready for dslr.

I can respect that. I was looking at the Kodak and Canon point and shoots a couple of years ago, but was blessed with a nice tax refund and was able to get my XTi. I'm glad I did. I love it.

If you're doing it in the next couple nights, be careful. Didn't I see that there's a pretty nasty storm moving in?
