Import greyed out in Adobe Lightroom

I understand that lightroom prevents you from importing a photo if it thinks this photo has already been imported. Lets take an example. I have an old photo I want to import. I can't find it in my lightroom catalogue. The file name is _DSC0002.jpg. I place it on my desktop and try to import it. It is greyed out. If I search in Lightroom, there are 2 other files with a filename of _DSC002.jpg. Neither of these is the same as the one I am trying to import. I then search for info on the file I am importing and try searching in Lightroom according the its creation date. No luck there either. So I cant import the file and I can't find it in Lightroom either. At least not the picture its supposed to be. Total frustration. Can anyone help? Unticking the 'dont import suspected duplicates' box doesn't work either. File still stays greyed out.

Under file handling in the right border try un-checking "Do not import suspected duplicates".

How about renaming the photo and then trying to import it?

Thanks, but I have tried that as indicated in my post. Makes no difference at all.

Thanks but it seems to look at more than the filename to decide whether a photo has been imported or not. Seeing it clearly knows where the suspected duplicate is sitting, it is irritating that it does not tell you where this location is

When that happens to me, I go to the task bar on the left, go to the very top, which should show the folders that are on your computer. Find your picture fold, then location the folder that your picture is in and open it that way.

I tried to re-create a similar problem on my computer, but LR will import it just fine. There may be a piece of information about the situation that you're overlooking. Any more details?

If this is a pc go to start menu and type in the file name in question in the search box... or type .jpg and search for it

Just use Windows Explorer "this time only" and drag it to the folder you want it in. The Syncronize the folder by right clicking and selecting syncronize. It will find the image and then in the lower right click import.

Thanks Cas. Your solution worked. When you access the file of photos on your hard drive via the file search on the left hand side of the Lightroom screen, it opens up the folder and there they all are, ready for import. if you go via the 'import photos' command in the taskbar at the top, you get a choice under 'source' of 'desktop', 'pictures' or 'other'. When I had pics stored in some other place in 'my documents' I would always click 'other' and that would take me into the normal Mac finder. Wrong. the photos are then all greyed out. But if you click on 'Pictures' even if the photos you want to import are not in the 'Pictures' folder, it takes you to the Lightroom version of your finder, and from their you can identify the right folder and import. Weird but it least it works. Thanks for your help.
