"It Can't Happen Here" by American author Sinclair Lewis, a semi-satirical 1935 political novel.

Sounds like a book about Obama.

Maybe, but I doubt that (with all respect to Sinclair Lewis). When fascism, or most probably the other extreme of the political spectrum, comes to America it will be burning the flag and carrying an EBT card.

All this stuff about evolution vs creation is really irrelevant. No matter how much you believe in either point of view, it doesn't change the truth one iota. Arguing about it solves nothing because belief rests easier on the human psyche than search for truth. Belief is the easy way out as opposed to lifetimes of hard study.

The only thing I hate is the use of mythology as fact. Here are the facts...all religions are based on a story (myth) that can never be proved. The christian faith is no more valid that the faiths of indigenous peoples of North American or Scientology. In fact the christian faith is more like Scientology than those faiths of the Pre-Columbian western world. These are just stories, the founders of this country were keenly aware of the issues with a state mandated religion not only from the point of Quakers, and Deists (Washington & Jefferson) but also from the history of Scotland & Ireland vs the Church of England.

Religion has no weight in the rule of law in this country where laws are above men. Now, a lot of folks are all warm and fuzzy thinking about their religion and the traditions surrounding it. That's fine for them, but I don't need to be told that because a group of people believe something I must act in a certain manner or submit my physical body to their set of rules.

If you people would not espouse your beliefs at any chance you can get there would be no comments at all. The act of believing is just fine but when it turns into a diatribe about how great your god is and how everybody else will burn in hell for not believing the same way you do it demands a response from other opinions. Belief is just that, a belief. When will the bible people learn that they should just keep their mouths shut and be happy practicing all by themselves. They even want to get their message into public schools where those things just dont belong. They want to force there beliefs upon anybody they can and that is just not right.

This conversation was beginning to look as though it was just an excuse to debate and I do not wish to enter into endless debatings.

But, I claim to be christian, and the concept of a hellfire doctrine appalls me.

When I was very young, to be honest, it used to frighten me, that is until I started letting the Bible dictate what the Bible says rather than the traditions of man, even though they might claim to be Christian. ie Santa Claus and the Easter bunny, for instance...

If we wish to be called Christian We should advocate what the Bible says and not the dictates and traditions of men.

The Bible does not advocate the hellfire roast - toast - sizzle - fry concept... I was raised with the hellfire and brimstone philosophy and am so very grateful to learn, from the Bible, that God has not originated this fiendish concept.

If you want to see where this concept came from do a little research and you will see that the word 'hell' in the Bible is taken from the Hebrew word 'sheol', which basically means the common grave of mankind not a burning place of eternal torment. Look it up for yourself.

God put life and death before mankind, not eternal torment for disobedience...

To get a true idea of what the Bible says of God's viewpoint on the roast - toast - sizzle - fry theology, we should let the Bible dictate what the Bible says and not tradition ladened religions, even though they may claim to be Christian.

Look up : Jeremiah 32:34,35/ The concept of burning people in hell for ever is not a true 'Bible doctrine. It is a doctrine created by men to enslave people in fear to obey the dictates of men.

(Jeremiah 32:34, 35) . . .And they (that is the very people who claimed to be worshipping God) went putting their disgusting things in the house upon which my own name has been called, in order to defile it. 35 Furthermore, they built the high places of Ba′al that are in the valley of the son of Hin′nom, in order to make their sons and their daughters pass through [the fire] to Mo′lech, a thing that I did not command them, neither did it come up into my heart to do this detestable thing,

Eccles 9:5, 10.... 5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all,

What good would it do God,that is, if he were fiendish enough, to roast someone forever if the individual was not even conscious that he was sufferring?

I hope this does not offend anyone.

It sounds so easy, but for the fact that the more rabid of the religious reich insist on hanging their religious symbols anywhere they like.

Of course you care what others believe. If you truly didn't, you wouldn't be posting in this and other threads like this. If you didn't, you (the generic and not specific "you") wouldn't be pushing for prayer in schools, the teaching of religious dogma tarted up to look scientific under the guise of "Intelligent Design", using public lands for the erection of little creche scenes and dotting the highways with crosses, whining because some stressed out sales associate says "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", attempting to control the bodies of women by butting into a matter between a woman and her doctor and a host of other actions that disprove your assertion that you don't care what others believe.

Oh my friend but they do try to tell others what to do....They tell women they can't use birth control or terminate a pregnancy, they tell the gays they are second class citizens, they claim their rights while attempting to restrain the rights of others. Once again so you understand completely...Religious tenants have NO WEIGHT in the legal system of the United States and are specifically excluded from the inflicting those beliefs on the citizens of this country. That is why every argument against women's rights and gays rights will loose in the end. The only arguments put forth against the rights of a women to control her reproductive system and the only arguments against marriage for homosexuals is based on religious tenants and as stated above these hold NO LEGAL WEIGHT in the United States of America.

By denying me a relationship with the Lord, my parents deprived me of a very valuable resource for dealing with the problems of life. If I knew at 18 that Jesus was real and thus Adam and Eve were real, i would have avoided harmful behaviors such as fornication, adultery, drunkenness, drug use, theft, and other sins I am guilty of committing.

Thankfully Jesus never gave up on me, and eventually I heard his call and responded positively. Having a relationship with Jesus and making Him number one in my life has allowed me to escape the prison of materialism, I focus on what's most important A strong relationship with God, which gives me the self confidence, patience and discipline to face boldly whatever life throws at me. In addition, I have no doubts that when the rapture of the church occurs (much sooner then people think) I Will be with my Lord and Saviour in Heaven and not on earth when all hell breaks loose literally.

Trusting in God and his word in the bible also has allowed me to overcome despair, depression and suicidal thoughts. You may choose to think your ancestors were primates, I choose to believe that my ancestor was made of the dust of the earth in God's own image. Man is not an animal, he was created to have dominion over the animals.

I realize that nothing I write will change your mind, so this answer and my testimony are for those who are honestly seeking to know if God exists and what is he like. My heart is troubled and burdened for atheists as I know where they WILL be spending eternity if they don't get right with Jesus. If anyone has serious questions ( not just looking for an argument) send me a pm. would be more then happy to share more of my testimony with anyone. God bless you all and God bless America

I agree with you 100%. I do not see how someone can look at this wonderful world that we live in and still not believe in God. It is a precision machine that could not have just happened accidentally, that kind of thinking is illogical. That would be akin to throwing a bunch of nuts and bolts together and expecting them to evolve into an automobile on their own. I teach my children by the Bible, and Gods word. They are taught morals and right from wrong. If they choose to not believe or follow Gods teaching when they become adults, that is their decision to make, and I can at least have the peace of mind of knowing that I did the best that I could for them.

I just do not see how people that claim to be photographers can go out into nature, and observe the beauty of Gods work, and yet not believe in Him. There is no way that this world just happened.

The big difference is that nuts and bolts do not have a tendency to come together and form new compounds like atoms and molecules do.

The world is not a "precision machine." It appears that way because humans evolved to fit what the world was like, the world was not created to fit the needs of humans or any other living thing.

Had you evolved on Titan, you would have waxed lyric over reddish skies, a high nitrogen content and the sweet smell of hydrocarbon compounds. The day might be a nice, balmy 250 degrees below zero F as you go shoot the local pond filled with liquid methane while rhapsodizing over the beauty of god's work.
