However, if, back in those 'glorious' times, you were of Chinese descent in the western states, black in the South, Indians on the reservations, Mexicans in Texas, Slavs in the Northeast US, then there were never 'Norman Rockwell' days for you. The people that Norman Rockwell portrayed used the Chinese to build the dams and cities of the far West at slave level salaries and extremely poor conditions. Those Indians which were not exterminated under the guise of "Manifest Destiny", were put on reservations on the poorest land in the west. Blacks got their freedom from lashes, but the whites turned them back into slaves by sharecropping, which was nothing little more than what the Middle Ages land owners gave the serfs. Mexicans in Texas were akin to the blacks in the South and the eastern Europeans in the Northeast were the miners who dug their own graves and owed their souls to the Company Store. They had to buy their own shovels, hats, lamps,the works. The made pennies a day and they died at 40 of lung disease.

So the facts are these. If you were of German, Scot, Irish, Welsh descent, had fair skin, and could name an ancestor that signed the Declaration or fought on the Continental Line, then you knew that Norman Rockwell America. If you were something other, then you had a rough row to hoe. The extreme right wing, the teahadists, the White Nation, and others want that era back. But it's gone and it ain't coming back again, as Darrell Scott sings. We are moving forward toward a new day and that day includes all humans, reagardless of their color, their heritage, their politics, their handicaps, mental and physical. Either get on board or run screaming for your mommas, cause the train ain't slowing down.
