Hello Jolly Roger, yes, the death penalty is still on the statute books. There has been eighteen executions this year. Thanks for viewing the pictures. Tejaswangler :)

Huntsville State Prison was established in 1849, located at Huntsville, Texas. All executions in the state are performed at the Huntsville Unit. Texas has had 490 executions since 1976, the most in the nation.

Prisoners that die at the Huntsville State Prison and not claimed by kin folks are buried at the Joe Byrd Cemetery, which is owned by the State of Texas. Each prisoner is provided a simple headstone. At last count, there are just a tab over 2,000 prisoners buried at the cemetery. Tejaswrangler :)

Your photos of Huntsville are very interesting and thanks for posting them. I worked in prisons for 10 years and found it far more interesting than the colleges where I also worked. We have a very old operating prison in MN (Stillwater) and it too has the special life and death atmosphere that is hard to shake and difficult to capture in photos.

Hello GypsyMn, are there any ghost stories attached to the prison in Stillwater? Any pictures? Thanks for viewing the pictures and telling us about the prison in Stillwater. Tejaswrangler :)
