Sigma 105mm macro OS vs. Nikon 105mm micro VR

I'm in the process of buying a new macro lens. I have read exhaustive reviews of both the Sigma and Nikon lenses, both which offer VR (or OS in the case of Sigma) and f/2.8 aperture. The Sigma lens' price has dropped $200 at most sites, bringing its cost below the Nikon. The Sigma has more settings to choose from, but, of course, the Nikon is a wonderful lens.

Does anyone have personal experience with the Sigma? A search at UHH only showed one minor discussion. Thanks.

P.S. Both are excellent lenses.

Yes, that is a good forum.

I have read numerous reviews of both lenses (e.g., http://www.techradar.com/news/photography-video-capture/cameras/best-macro-lens-for-nikons-8-tested-1079616/page:1#articleContent). I'm interested in comments by UHH members who have used one or both lenses extensively, which I think would be more valuable information than opinions/tests by professional reviewers.

I use a Nikkor 105G for 90% of my photography. Several other Macro-photographers in our Macro Forum use Nikkor 105-mm macros, and a few use the Sigma 105-mm macro. You need to view the Macro Equipment Set-Ups thread to SEE who are using Sigma & Nikkor 105 lenses: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html Then PM to them directly, or start an inquiry thread in the Macro Forum.

Douglass, that's a great tip.

Let me be specific re my needs. I have a D90 with a vertical grip. I plan on buying the D600 soon after it is released. I want to use a 105mm VR macro for macro, portrait and close sports shots. Will the Nikon micro 105 vr work effectively in all three areas?

Thanks.

The D600 is FX format, so cropping is not a factor (I am envious!]. Maximum aperture of 105-mm f/2.8 is bright enough for both macro focusing and sports panning (although I would prefer a zoom lens for this). Most studios use 85-mm lenses for formal FX portraiture, but if your room is long enough, you can push back with a 105-mm lens.

You cannot go wrong with a Nikkor 105D or 105G.

Thanks. I haven't quite told the wife about my plans to get a new FX camera. Ha!

Hi, I use the Sigma 105 1:2.8 - my absolute favourite lens, hasn't let me down yet - only use it hand held as i chase Butterflies etc and could come to grief with a tripod. i do get blurred photos but that is me when i am on uneven ground etc

I hate to say this, but owners are not always the best sources for an impartial review. I have, use, and like the Nikon 105mm. I would give it an excellent review. Someone who uses the Sigma would probably give that a good review. I take personal comments with a grain of salt. For purchasing, I rely on reviewers who compare equipment all the time, so they have a basis for comparison. The more specific they get, the better.

Since you've read all the reviews, I'd say you did your research. you've gotten the pros and cons of each lens. All you have to do now is lay out the cash (or plastic).
