This is a “postcard” picture of the Portland Head lighthouse from over 10 years ago (D50) taken from a whale watch boat. I shot and shot from a moving platform until I nailed the light in the tower. My question, would you have done that or simply Photoshopped it in?

If you Photoshop something in, is it still a photograph?

It's a nice shot, but I don't think the presence or absence of the light changes it much.

If time allowed I would have waited for the light.
If not, post processing.

If you have the artistic skill and tools to properly add the light afterward, go for it. I'd rather invest the time to catch the light in the original image. It's a photograph either way.

I also don't think people expect to see a light during the day. It's a nice touch though.

If I care to have the light I would try to get the light. Otherwise I would take the pictures without the light. In my opinion without the light is fine. I wouldn't photoshop it in.

Yup! Perhaps someone can create an image in photoshop without taking any picture.

Sure, same as photoshopping something out, like power lines.

I was up early in Copper Harbor MI and took about 50 frames to catch the beacon. The morning mist included some of the excaping rays. Nice shot from a moving deck! I almost tossed my cookies trying to shoot from the tour boat in Lake Superior...

Do you think anyone would be the wiser if he corrected the waterline sloping down to the left?

The coastline slopes to the right - I think the lighthouse is pretty straight (I did correct that, as I remember).

You could certainly use Photoshop as a painting tool, but then it wouldn't be a photograph.

Looking at the light house, it appears to be only a couple of degrees off vertical.
