I have my used, quality digital equipment for sale and would like to avoid the complications with Craigslist, eBay, and ruthless dealerships. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I'd really like to find a company who would trade my equipment for new equipment. I've read the Robert's Photography has a good reputation.

You can try mpb.com. I have been dealing with them lately. They give pretty good prices on used cameras and lenses.
I have traded in some cameras and lenses on some of their cameras and lenses.
They are pretty quick about giving you estimates, shipping and paying.
I've been satisfied with them.

Allens Camera has always given me fair value for my used gear towards new gear. They only take gear in great shape. Ask for Brandon or Rob. Tell them Gerald Williams sent you.

BTW Adorama camera comes down from NYC and buys Allens' used gear to resell in their store and online (I have personally witnessed this) , so you know Allens has great used gear. They are also my favorite pro camera store for new or used gear I buy. I use them even more often than B&H ,Adorama or Amazon. They are the largest camera store in the Philadelphia, Pa . area. Cheers

I used Adorama back a few years . They gave me a fair price for used film equipment. B&H didn't want to buy used at that time. Camera stuff is like used cars. They won't give you anything for it ,but when you go to buy it from them they get top dollar. Just a matter of economics.

I've had no problems buying or selling on Ebay. Retail stores give you next to nothing for used equipment. Remember they can only reasonably re-sell it for the going used rate so you pay their profit. You can try even selling on the UHH. I've bought a two camera and three lenses from UHH members. Or you can save it and give it to a friend.

We've used B&H a few times. You have to take a reality check on real values before you start.

First you tell them by email what you have. Second, they estimate what they want to pay. Third, you ship it to them with labels they provide. Fourth, they inspect your gear and confirm the price. Last, you decide if you want it back, get a check or take a credit in their store.

In one case they gave me a little more for a lens than the first estimate. It is a smooth, efficient and safe process. But again, they are buying "wholesale" so that they can make a fair profit selling it at "retail". You are not meeting people in a parking lot for a craigslist deal!

The only experience I have personally had with selling used equipment was a ca. early 1970's canon AE-1 that I traded in on a new 60D; considering that the AE-1 was 40+ years old, but it looked and worked well, I was not unhappy with their offer--about what I had paid for it.

The rule of thumb on selling used equipment to a reseller is that you will get about 50% of current retail price for the equipment, but that may vary somewhat based upon the number of them available and the demand. Remember, the reseller has to clean it up, and maybe do some undiscovered repairs, and then resell it with a 30% markup which is generally considered the necessary minimum markup to cover costs.

Have you tried KEH? They seem to get praises here on UHH.

Dealing with Allens camera, I have gotten way more than 50% on my used gear (in excellent condition). So that is not any rule of thumb if the gear is in great shape.

Usually, pay up to 70% of retail depending on the condition of the item(s)

I did tried on occasions to sell some stuff, once with Adorama and B&H, but I did not liked the pricing I received, so I went with eBay instead and got at least five times the amount! I will never try again to go with a major retailor, its just not worth it!

For me where I sell depends on how quickly I wish to move the items. If I have my eye on something new I want then I go for the quickest sale that covers the cost of the new item.If I am in no hurry for the newer thing then I'll use ebay or uhh.

For almost 10 years I was on the other side of the counter. I was a used camera equipment purchaser for a major dealer here in Wisconsin. Remember that the dealer is there to make money and lots of it. Used equipment can be extremely profitable is done right. First they figure out what they can sell a piece for then basically cut that price in half to give you your price. They usually will break that routine and give your more if you are trading in rather than just selling outright. You will never get what the piece is truly worth when selling to a dealer so dealing with Craigslist or eBay is a good option. I have sold half of my film equipment on Craigslist and things always went very smoothly. The bigger a used equipment business is the better and fairer deal you will usually get. Guys like KEH camera are honest and truly fair.
