While at Yosemite I fell into the Merced River while trying to get "that shot". I knew right away that my 24mm-70mm 2.8 II was a goner. But I had a lot of hope that my Canon 1DX would pull through. They were both in the water no more than 3 secs. I am covered by insurance. Phew! Two days in rice still water inside of glass of lens, sent both camera and lens to Canon, lens DOA and camera 1,800 to fix. I had 2 24mm-70mm 2.8 II lenses and the insurance is paying 1,800 to replace. $3600 total. My camera worked after I let it dry out. My question is I trust Canon to do a good job at fixing my camera, but it's been in the water. For 1,800 more I can buy a lDX mkII brand new, not replacing the lens since I already have one. Should I buy the Mk II and just have Canon send back the Mk I? Attached: 1st pic 3hrs after getting wet, then 2nd pic two days after. And if I do buy a new one, Canon, B&H or Adaorama or any other suggested places.

When electronic parts are being made the use clean water to clean them. So if you trust Canon to take your camera apart and clean the parts and put it back together dry, They have it repaired,If not get the upgrade that you are lusting over. Happy shooting.

You have insurance, that you pay for, take the money. Get the new IDX mkII. Keep the other as a back up. Any decent online vendor, B&H, Adorama, Amazon will do. Keep a balanced approach to these things....

I would not want a car that had been in flood waters, nor a camera that had been in water. I'd think there could be electrical problems that crop (pun intended) up later. What a great time to upgrade!

What do you have insurance for? Take the $$$ and get the upgrade. A blessing in disguise

Take the insurance money, have the camera fixed, get camera back, sell camera, get more than $1800 for camera, then buy the DX II. I'd feel ok buying a camera that has been completely overhauled by Canon, but eventually you are going to sell that camera and if you never get it fixed, some poor soul is going to get it from you and like most people, you probably aren't going to say anything about it getting wet. Personally, I don't think I could sell a camera that's been wet unless it has been completely overhauled and deemed to be satisfactory by an authorized Canon repair center. Get it fixed and sell it or keep it as a backup.

Agree, forget the repairs, take the money & move on, you'll be better off in the long run

Camera was working fine before I sent in in for repairs, I wouldn't sell it w/o telling someone what had happen, just not me. Maybe I'll use it until it conks out, or I fall into the river again??

This is best action for most electronic gear that gets wet (water inside).
- Remove all batteries immediately!
- If salt water, flush with fresh water.
- Flush with isopropyl alcohol (99% if you can get it)
- dry - rice, desiccate, mild heat (hair dryer but not too close)
- test only when you are sure it is super dry
- good luck

Thanks, unfortunately I'm no stranger to falling into water. The good news is that it was fresh water. Canon didn't eve open the lens, but sent it back (now a paper weight). Did all that and the camera was working when I sent it in and when they send it back it should be still working. I think that their repair is a standard for camera's getting wet. They said nothing about the sensor. Just the main circuit board being replaced. All other parts were the body casing.

Question? Should I stay away from 42nd Street Camera, Pos reviews mostly and when I talked to them, they did give me two quotes, grey market and US warranty. Any good or bad experiences I should be aware of?

"Pos reviews mostly"

Don't you think there is a reason for that?

That's what worries me?? Bots or People? Just asking if anyone out there had any experience with them? By nature I'm suspicious of all!

Insurance is paying $1,800 to replace a lens costing $1,600?
