Drove up to the top of the world this morning to Mount Evans elevation 14,265 feet.

On the way down we saw this Marmot standing up looking at us. Just had to take his photo.

Marmots are one of the largest members of the squirrel family. They can be two feet in length and weigh up to 11 pounds and live in colonies of about 10-20 individuals and eat many types of grasses, berries, lichens, mosses, roots, and flowers.

Did you make it all the way to the top?? If so, how much snow at Summit Lake and is it still frozen over? I love to go there and watch the tourist poop their pants about the very narrow road, sheer drop off and no safety rail. I also like to go to the bristle cone pine area and get some wonderful pics of the poor gnarled trees. Thanks for the reminder that I need to get up there soon before the fires stop all the travel.

I sent two friends up there once on motorcycles, and they ran into a late summer blizzard on the way down. Their only goal after that was to strangle me.

Yes we did, got up there at 5.30am to see the sunrise but it was very hazy and cloudy from the many forest fires we have right now.
Yes those roads can be scary but if you drive slow you are fine. We stopped at the Bristle cone area as well which has so many gorgeous wild flowers.

All the snow has almost gone from Summit Lake so many tourists, hiking etc.

A "whistle pig"! Great catch Lorima, they only live in places I want to be. Seem like you had a good day.

what a delightful portrait of this little guy!! I actually had to check out the difference between your marmot and our groundhog/woodchuck. Seems your fella is much more fun and social. I love how you've captured him, upright and posing! A treasure of a shot!!

I agree with rockdog. What you got there is a whistle pig. Very common in Summit Country where I lived for a stint. Good capture. vz

Thanks, Yes they do make a loud whistle noise. They like to live high up in the mountains don't they.
