As a general rule, I'm not a huge fan of eight-legged beasts that dangle from trees. Nevertheless, I was taken aback by the glorious colors and otherworldly weirdness of these golden silk orb-weaver spiders I found in an Alabama coastal swamp this week. I believe these are both females but I'll let the experts make that call. Fascinatingly, the tensile strength of a thread of anchor silk from one of these spiders is stronger than that of steel by a factor of eight!
