Texas Brown Tarantula

This is a Texas Brown Tarantula (aphonopelma hentzi) "she",(presumably), was found in my garage in South Central Texas.
They have multiple eyes ( 6 to 10 +-) & it looks like they have 10 legs but have only 8 legs. The two shorter looking legs are not legs at all; they are Pedi (foot) Palp's. They actually have finger nails & hair (as you can see). They eat crickets, meal worms, etc. They burrow & build their nest around them selfs with an opening so that they can come & go (or escape) as they please. They are non aggressive & they are very beautiful arachnid's. NOT including its legs & Pedi Palp's it was approximately 3 inches long & 1 & 1/2 inches wide. This one is probably an adult and they can get larger than this one!

A beauty! I owned a couple back in the 1980's when I was volunteering at The National Zoo's invertebrate exhibit

Linda: from just looking at the pictures, can you tell if this Tarantula is a male or a female????
Let me know what you think.
Thank you.

Anna Z. Yea, this one was pretty docile. We put it in a place where there was plenty of "loose" dirt, debris, etc., in case it wanted to burrow & make itself a place to live; called "home".

Mr Clude. (Excuse me Linda). It is female. The males are not as large and bulky. The easiest way to tell most spiders is by their pedipalps. A male has greatly enlarged and modified palps as insemination organs, may be brightly colored, as in jumping spiders. Linda, we may have met. I worked at the Bay Center in A.A. Co in early eighties. I donated local insects, etc. I had raised in exchange for pinable specimens of their exotics. Enjoy the day, Bill.
