It's an adult stone fly which hatches in the spring and early summer all over the
country and their imitations can make for some great dry fly fishing for fly fisherman. Here in the west they are called giant stone flies and also salmon flies.

I used to love fishing with a big 2inch dry fly imitation because the fish really hit them hard on the waters surface and got my heart really pumping.

Just found some photos of adult stone flies photographed on a trip in Northern California near Mount Shasta on the Sacramento River.
