For some of us old timers, it will always be Utica Club. Schultz and Dooley would be disappointed otherwise.

Utica is the Mohawk Valley and a bit of a distance from Hudson Valley and I 87

I have lived in upstate NY for almost 70 years and I am still discovering new things to see. I avoid the highway like the plague. Although I-87 north of Schroon Lake was designated one of Americas most scenic highways many years ago it is drive by scenery ( and quite beautiful views of the Adirondacks) there is no place to stop and take pictures. Lake George is indeed the Queen of American Lakes and the view from the village at the south end is spectacular.Not far north of that is the Natural Stone Bridge in Pottersville, which Bob McCulloch mentioned. It is an amazing place and they have an unbelievable rock shop there. To fully explore this region you would need a lot of time to enjoy driving the back roads - alternate routes - like getting off the Northway south of Elizabethtown, and taking Route 9 which parallels Rt 87 , and would take you right over the Ausable Chasm bridge and you could get back on I 87 just north of there. North of Plattsburg you could take the ferry from Cumberland Head and travel up through the islands on Lake Champlain. But if you are planning on driving from Philadelphia to Montreal in one day you will not have time to take any of these side trips. I hope you decide to make it a two day trip and take advantage of the many good suggestions posted here. By the way, you will NOT be going to the Thousand Islands of the St Lawrence- that is way off the route to Montreal.
