There's plenty to see and photograph, but you're not going to see much of it from the NYS thruway!

In all fairness, sometimes it may help to know what's along the route instead of flying past something or missing it entirely. Like I never knew Ausable Gorge was along 9, or what it was, even if I saw it on a map.

Some, like big guy, don't like to brag.

If you can stop at the visitor's center, you will usually find much information available as for local interests.

If I recall, I-87 is a regular interstate, not the NY State Thruway north of Albany or so, with lots of chances for detours. There is an interesting memorial atop a small rock cliff in the median somewhere south of Keene. (I can check the location from my cousin if you are interested. He salutes every time he passes it.) The U.S. flag is the only man-made thing visible in the area, aside from the road, of course. Not a natural wonder but a reminder of sacrifices along a highway built by a soldier.

I87 is the NYS thruway, when you get to Albany it swings west through Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo.

Are you kidding? Saratoga Springs, Fort Ticonderoga, Lake Placid, the Something Caves, lovely rolling countryside, just to name few. If you stopped at every photo worthy spot along the way, you'd never get to Montreal!

Rheinbeck Aerodrome, WW1 airshow if interested. Or are you just making 30 second stops on the way. I-87 could be a vacation by itself.

The rest stop between ext 16 and 17 heading north has a good info center, also above Albany just before the Warren County line is a rest stop with another very good info center, it does help to have a general idea of where you are stopping as there is a lot to see and can overwhelm you is you let it. I'd check the Warren County calendar for events when your going to be there if you plan on stopping overnight in that area. Same thing in Ulster and Duchess if your stopping further south.

I think your referring to Natural Stone Bridge and Caves, Potterville, NY?, just north of Lake George anyway, there is a east west road north of LG very pretty, if I remember right Rt8, also several nice lakes Brayant, Paradox, hmm, memory , it'll come to me, Bob.

Right you are, it's been 20yrs since I've been on it. Is the speed limit still only 55?

Good Hudson Valley link. Thanks. Most rest stops have brochures galore n behind the desk ASK. Events are great photo ops.

While in the Mid-Hudson area in NY stop at the Basha Kill, off Route 209. My favorite spot for nature photography.
