A mirrorless camera is small and light, easy to carry anywhere and it has interchangeably lenses and excellent image quality.
Just in case it crosses your mind.

We're doing a lot of touring now that I'm retired. I don't like lugging around my 35mm slr but my iPhone 6 doesn't produce the results I'd like. What do you guys recommend as a decent quality Point & Shoot camera for less than $500 or $600 max?

Thanks

Sony A6000. That's what I got for when I need a compact camera. I was looking for compact, decent quality, and a reasonable price for a camera I wouldn't be using all the time. Take a look at Fuji, too

Still, I much prefer my D750. Use your DSLR as much as you can.

I noticed that the latest consumer magazine did a review of point and shoot cameras and rated them based on features etc. That is something you may want to look at. The problem with a question like this is we can tell you what we have and like but we can't really judge the 100 or more we have not had experience with.

My experiences have been that you will be happy with an SX60, B700, or P900.

Rather than a specific brand or model I will recommend a must-have feature, an eye level view finder. You can still use the rear lcd if you prefer, but there will be many times when the lcd cannot be clearly seen and only an eye level view finder will do.

. . . Lighter than any 1970's rangefinder camera.

Not being snarky, but 1970’s rangefinders were like 95% metal construction, unlike most cameras made today which are prolly 90% plastic (I’m a huge fan of 50s - 70s cameras so maybe my prejudices are showing).

above link is to Shotkit - he recommends 4 different cameras - within your budget. I have the A6000 Sony and really like it

When you used your 35mm SLR did it produce the results you like? If yes then which camera and lenses did you use? That way someone can recommend a camera that can produce similar or better results.

Another vote for the Nikon B700, for the reasons cited -- especially when traveling by plane. It travels better than my DSLR outfit and does a fine job in most situations. I sometimes add a compact tripod(collapses to 8 inches).

Point & shoot - aaaaaugh! I know some people will swear by point and shoot and some produce good images...for a time... but after buying several for my adult daughters not one of them lasted out a year. They are fragile and every one the lens stopped functioning. The slightest bump can ruin these things. You want light and sturdy then sell your old stuff and buy up and get a Sony or Fuji mirrorless system. Small light & expandable (lenses) with outstanding picture quality.

Fuji T20. Love it. So much lighter than my Canon gear.My Canon 400mm L glass weighs more than my Fuji and two kit lenses combined.
