I'm a new member and novice with an old version of PhotoshopCS 8. I'm recently retired and now have the time to try to learn more about shooting and editing. I'm thankful to have the opportunity to consult the talent on uglyhedgehog. I feel like the sun popping through the trees is distracting. Any suggestions on how to fix that? Also any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

I actually think it is quite nice. Not distracting at all to me. Adds to the composition.

👍 and that’s about it. I didn’t find the sun glow distracting, at all. Nice!

I would level the horizon, crop out whatever is in the left hand corner (it is distracting to me and doesn't add anything to the scene).
Then I would try to lighten up the fore ground a little to give the stair steps a little detail. If the sun peaking through the trees bothers you, you can clone it out. I would try it and see if it makes the scene better that way to you. Overall I think it is a good scene with a nice sunset back ground.
These are JMHOs.

I agree with Soul Dr.

The sun adds to the shot, but I’d crop on the left a bit. JMHO.

The focal point could be that gorgeous light emphasizing the textures of the wooden railing. Beautiful curvy lines there too. If this sounds appealing, cover the sun with black from the silhouetted leaves (clone tool), level the horizon, and then crop out left side to make a vertical aspect - placing the front part of the railing in or near the lower left corner of the frame. Or make the lines of the railings more symmetrical/centered by also cropping a bit off the right side. Nice!!

If you have an image editing program with a clone brush like Photoshop, you could try cloning out the hotspot. But I do not think it detracts from the image either.

Like others said, crop out the left side and level the horizon but the thing that got me is the two lines of clouds in the sky try to lead my eyes away from the subject (either out of the frame or towards the left of the image). I like the sun and love the photo!!

I tried messing with those lines in PS with free transform, masks, and cloning stamp. Not perfect but heading in the right directly IMHO.
