hello everybody,
My Canon 6d offers several aspect ratios: 3:2 4:3 16:9 and 1:1
So far I had been shooting only in 3:2 ratio
Now, I would like to learn what each ratio implies and if magazine photo editors prefer one ratio to another and why.
I know that I can get some of this information in internet, but I am more interested in practical results based on experiences.
I hope this question makes sense,
Thank you very much
I see images in magazines of different aspect ratio and I don't think there is one that is best. It's best however to shoot only with aspect ratio of 3:2 with your camera because you can always crop to other aspect ratio later.

If you get the answer here, doesn't that mean that you ARE getting the answers from the internet?
Basically, it's math. If a magazine full page is 9x12, then the ratio would be 3:4 (or 4:3 in portrait orientation) 1:1 is square, 16:9 is pretty much standard for flat screen TV's now, and 2:3, which translates to a print size of 2x3 4x6, or 8x12 and so on, is pretty much what is considered the standard ratio that most 35mm SLRs and DSLRs shoot.
People like 8x10s on the wall (for some reason....they are way too small) that would be 4:5 ratio.
Magazines don't always print full page, so the best thing to do is crop to the subject where it makes sense for the best way to "tell the story" and stop worrying about ratios and all that silly math stuff.
Thank you guys, very enlighting
Making maximum use of the sensor (3:2) will give you the most opportunities when it comes to cropping to the optimum composition (not always obvious or predictable at the time of shooting). There's also something to be said for shooting slightly wide and then cropping in PP.
Thank you R.G. Scotland I'll try your advice about wider!
Each ratio doesn't imply anything. It (they) simply give you the ability to select one that meets your needs or desires.
Like in-camera cropping to get the format you desire.
As for the magazine publisher usage, it depends on what size image they want to use for the article.
Thank you Long shadow it clarified a lot

Aspect ratio is all over the place; depends on magazine page size, layout (especially columns), placement and size of the image.
My advice is to be sure to not crop too closely when you shoot. Leave lots of room for cropping in the magazine. If it won't fit where they want it, they will reject it.
Very valuable advise jcboy3, I tend to crop/edit on camera
Old advice from Film Camera shooting days. MF size 6x7cm format is best for Front Cover Magazine usage.
Hi, I am from film days but what is MF? Thanks

I've used 2-1/4x2-1/4 (120 roll film) in the past. Boy were the slides and color prints nice! But I just use the digital 35mm format now.
