Here's the email I got...

We’re excited to announce that Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.

SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. With SmugMug, we’ll continue to focus on you, the Flickr members who inspire us all with your work.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. You will still access Flickr with your current login credentials and you will have the same Flickr experience as you do now. We will continue to work to make your Flickr experience even better.

We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.

If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.

Thanks,
The Flickr Team

This is old news it was all over the photography blogs about 5 days ago and it’s was posted on UHH at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-525201-1.html

SmugMugs CEO did not disclose his plans for Flicker.

I think the line of thinking is that Yahoo had no idea of how to run a photo sharing site and they more or less did not do much with it in term of improvements. SmugMug is a photo sharing site and it is likely going to be a good thing for Flicker and Flicker customers. Will it still be free? See my comment 2nd paragraph above.

I heard but not sure, that smugmug could/would sell use of posted pics and not notify you. Anyone know? I heard photobucket did it to.

As a non-professional who does not sell his pictures, I'm not as concerned about the host's actions in that regard as some would be. I am most concerned that Flickr retain its hierarchical structure: photos into Albums; Albums into Collections; Collections into higher-level Collections; etc. I depend on that structure to provide an easy path for viewers. AFAIK, Flickr is one of the very few photo hosts that provides that type of structure.

I had not given it much thought, but I do keep a Flickr site so I looked at SmugMug to see what I am about to get into. SmugMug ain't free. The basic plan is ~ $48 annually. Not sure if that will apply to the Flickr imports, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

My Flickr account is not free--I think I pay $50/year for it, but some of the features I like are not (or at least used to not be) available to the free users. With 41,000 photos hosted there, I'm willing to pay a small fee to have them organized a way that works for me.

My church uses SmugMug, and as a volunteer photographer for it I've had to work with that host--I don't really care for it all that much. If it were all that were available I'd use it, but I much prefer Flickr.

We shall have to see. I have the free account on Flickr, and it has been very nice. A couple hundred pictures, all for FREE. I follow people. They follow me. And the experience has been very enriching.
But I may have to come around to accepting that this service is something that one is destined to pay for.

Already did the download of all my Flickr pix, as described by Flickr. Have looked at SmugMug before and chose them over Zenfolio. Many out there now. Because of the previous research, I will likely follow through on a SmugMug account, after another look-see.

I immediately followed the instructions on downloading my pics from Flickr. Other than that, who cares. It just another web site marketing their form of new shit and making life difficult by throwing decisions in my path. I'm not ready to deal with that!
