I got an email from Photography Life with this article link.

Thought it interesting myself and thought you might like it. I know My system is starting to bog down and may be looking for / building one in the near future. I know there h as been a lot of discussion here, but I have not seen a list of parts to build on yourself, which can save money.

Maybe before you do that, that you purge you computer of all it files and left overs you no longer need or using, keep your computer lite and store files and photos on portable hard drives. Also if your computer can be upgraded on memory and possibly a solid state drive!

Adjust this for current cpu, motherboard, storage etc - and you have somewhat of a step by step. Pixeldiarist is me, btw.

And another thing to remember is that all of the INTEL and AMD CPUs currently available and those that are to be debuted soon will have the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. Neither INTEL nor AMD have CPUs that are new enough to not have these flaws. If you can wait a couple of years they will have non-vulnerable CPUs (that do not need nor slow down with the firmware "fix").

And if you wait a couple of years, you’ll be able to buy 2-4x the performance for the same $. And if you wait a couple of more years, you’ll be able to buy... (you get the idea). And if you continue with that thought process, you’ll never buy a new computer 😳.

I was not suggesting anyone who needs an update now should wait two years. My current PC can only accept 16Gb of RAM and is 6+ years old. But it has an i7 CPU and a decent GPU so I am in no hurry to replace it. I will wait for secure CPUs. The newer CPUs will have bugs - just not these same bugs. And like you said, it will have 2 to 4 times the performance.

Thanks Richard. I do that on a regular basis. I just need to reboot more often I think.

Thanks Michael

I've heard nothing about the meltdown and Spectre until now. Thanks, I'll have to look into that. It seems I fall in that group.
