Is Light room not available for a one time purchase? I don't like the monthly thing.

I don't know if it can still be bought but I do know that it is no longer supported.

Perhaps, but in the end I don't think it will do for your photography as much as the Adobe plan. The "monthly thing" is very easy and provides a lot of "bang for the buck" with Photoshop included. Perhaps the Adobe software is not the right choice for you, there are many other programs available.

Yes, but you'd be buying outdated software because you don't like the monthly thing. Or you can pay it yearly, but you probably don't like the yearly thing either. Oh, and you get Photoshop with either the monthly or the yearly thing. Actually it's a very good deal.

At first I resisted the monthly plan also. I was irked that I would have to pay for something every month. Then I realized that the monthly plan was cheaper than buying new and improved versions of LR and PS every few years. I also realized that I pay monthly (or annually) for many other things--utilities, internet, cable TV, newspapers, subscriptions to magazines, etc. In addition, the monthly plan allows access to many other Adobe programs which are kept updated and improved throughout the year. All in all, $9.99/month seams like a reasonable price. We'll just have to see how much the price rises in the future to see if is still a bargain.

Adobe just announced a price increase for Adobe Cloud with my renewal notice, but the Photographer's plan of Photoshop and Lightroom is still $10/month. Unchanged from once they set the price to $10/mo 5 yrs ago. Incidentally the initial price was $20 or $30, I can't remember - but if anything the price has dropped and Adobe has added value to the package. In any case, the price increase on the full cloud suite is only 6%, or from $50 to $53/month. Hardly a deal-breaker for those who use more than the basic photo package. The photo package is still the best deal for the best software out there.

I too had a innate resistance to the whole subscription thing........still do....but
The $10/month for Adobe’s “Creative Cloud for Photographers” has got to be one of the best bargains on the planet if you enjoy the whole post processing and editing experience.
For me it is just as much fun as taking the shot.

With the Adobe subscription program you will always have the latest, most up to date versions of both Lightroom and Photoshop on your PC or Mac.

My understanding is that the "crowd" is rushing to Luminar. My old LightRoom serves me well professionally, working with Nik software, which is now free. I personally do not like "renting" software.

The monthly thing is a good deal. Really.
If you bought LR6 (I think you still can, but they don't make it easy) you would have Lightroom, with which you can organize your photos and do some editing.
Until you buy your next camera.
If that's in the immediate future (this year or so) you might be able to get LR6 to read your raw files, but if it's a couple years out, LR6 will probably not be able to use the current Adobe Camera Raw, which is the key to doing editing. LR6 is a dead end and Adobe will not be offering updates.

If you're halfway serious about photography you know that there are costs to any hobby. Golf, fishing, things like that come to mind. Even something like needlework requires you to buy supplies now and then. How much did your camera and lens cost you? $9.99/month (plus sales tax) is not a high price to pay for the value you get. It's significantly less than my impulse purchases. And I get good value from the monthly subscription, while my impulse purchases have a pretty poor value record.

LR is a pretty good editor, and it covers probably 90% of my photos. But where it really shines is in organization of my images. If you go with the subscription you get all the updates to the program as they come out and you get Photoshop included. You might not want Photoshop at this point, but since it's there you have the opportunity to grow in your hobby. There are too many free Photoshop tutorials online to count accurately.

Do you already have an older version of LR? If so, I’d suggest keeping it for basic editing, cataloging, etc., and purchase either Luminar or ON1 18.1, which both cost less than LR but seem to me to be just as powerful, especially ON1. You can use either or both of these programs as a plug-in to LR, and you’re all set.

I have LR 5.7 and use both of these programs as plug-ins. I’m very happy with them. I have never had Photoshop, so I can’t say for sure, but ON1 claims its new 18.1 version does what Photoshop will do. Either of these programs also has its own, but different, version of cataloging from LR. Both companies are promoting their programs right now, and either can be purchased for somewhere south of $100. I got my ON1 18.1, the newest version, for $69.00. That’s a lot cheaper than the stand-alone LR. There’s a learning curve, but neither is any harder to learn than LR, and there are numerous teaching videos available for either of them. Several of them come with the packages.

If your decision is strictly about money, then go somewhere else and not pirate LR. Considering how much money you already spend on gear and everything else, $10 monthly is not so bad. While you might other programs more to your liking, the fact of the matter is that LR and PS are the gold standards with more free online documentation than any rival.

Please note that that is $149.00. $30 more than an annual subscription. It would cover 15 months. And you do not get Photoshop with it.

Adobe is updating and improving LR and Photoshop all the time. If you decided you wanted the updates, you would need to buy a whole new package (or upgrade cost, which I think is around $80.00) You would rapidly spend more on the stand alone for less functionality. I was a PS Elements user for years until I went back and realized I was upgrading almost every time an improved version came out. I was spending much more than $119.00 a year for a lot less program.

The reason I was resistant to the monthly plan at first was that I simply did not understand a key point about how the software works. I thought one had to use Lightroom and Photoshop while connected to the web. This also seemed to imply for me that my photos would not be local on my own machine as well. So both of these mistaken ideas made it a non starter for me. To be clear about how this works, you download a locally run application called Creative Cloud. This then manages the downloading and upgrading of both Photoshop and Lightroom, both of which are then run completely locally without further Web connection. All photos are also stored on your local machine unless you specifically wish to use other Web sharing features available in LR and PS. I have always felt that Adobe assumes that everyone understands this, but at least in the case of this former IT professional it was an incorrect assumption. I have always felt their marketing should be more clear about this.
