I’m heading to Europe for a river cruise this summer. I’ll be taking my Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 18-200 plus a Nikon 35mm 1.8 for night shots. I feel that I need something wider than 18mm (28 on my dx body) for shots in crowded cities. I am considering the Nikor 10mm. It’s very small so I can stuff it in a pocket. Any thoughts or suggestions. I’ll be going from Prague to Budapest. Thanks.

The Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM at $399.00 is a decent lens at a little over a pound and around 3.5 inches long.

I think 18-200 would cover most anything you will come across. The wider lens would be nice for back alleys and interiors but beware of distortions. Keep the camera level to minimize keystone or merging verticals. Maybe also (or instead) consider something longer for shots from the boat.

I took a river boat from Budapest to Amsterdam a few years ago. Besides my big DSLR I carried a small bridge camera(Nikon P520) which I found I used a lot. If you could find one refurbished for a reasonable cost I would recommend it.

I always paired my Nikon 10-24, but this is a 900 dollar lens with an excellent reputation. Nikon now has a 10-20 that is more reasonably priced, and it gets good reviews. I prefer a zoom lens on trips because it gives you quicker options, you are sometimes moving fast and need to zoom quickly to get the shot. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

My wife will have her LUMIX P&S which takes surprising good quality photos. There are times when we just take that with us. But it too does not go wide enough, hence the desire for a wider angle lens for the Nikon.

I would take a sonyrx100 mark iii or iv with the DSLR. You will find many tines this is the high quality camera you will always have in your picket.

Again, this is about a 10-20mm wide angle. The rx100 only goes to 28mm, which is the same as the Lens I already own. We will have a LUMIX pocket camera with us.

Have you come up with a budget yet? Really hard to help you, if you don't provide important information.

I should note that you are going on a trip that will cost a good bit, so you might want to invest in a good lens.

I have used used Nikon 18-200 & 18-300s with river boat & land tours in the past and they proved be quite versatile for shots from the boat but I did add an inexpensive & lightweight Tokina 12-28 f4 DX lens (18-42mm equiv) for wide angle needs. In small villages and cities it was just right. It was fast enough to capture many interior shots as well. I think at least a 24mm on the wide end is much better than the 28mm (Fx equiv) that the 18-200 provides. The 18-200 though is wonderful for most needs and a one lens lightweight solution is great for travel. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for your feedback. I think a Nikon 10-20 will find its way into my bag. It gets great reviews, is relatively inexpensive, and will provide me with the coverage I need. Along with my 18-200 I should be good to go.

We are doing a similar cruise the following summer so I am going through the same thought process. I have some expensive equipment, but do I want to bring heavy expensive equipment along and worry about damage, theft, and inconvenience or go with a bridge camera I can put in my pocket? After all the photo opportunities you will come across on that cruise have been taken thousands of times in high resolution. Having said that, I know I will have withdrawal symptoms if I don't have my best equipment to capture images.

Anyway, I realize the above was no help but hopefully you can share your photo experiences when you return. If I had to recommend something for you now, I agree that the 18-200 would work well for a wide variety of images including long shots from the boat. I am thinking that there may be some very interesting night shots from your balcony. A wide angle lens could be helpful, but I wouldn't spent a lot of money unless you intend to use it on a regular basis after you return.
