I drove around Lake Tahoe last August, 2017. Photo opps were not as plentiful as I had hoped for. Lots of construction, so many parking spots were either closed off or filled with construction vehicles and equipment. I hope you have better luck.

The view coming over the pass into Incline Village is spectacular. On a sunny morning fluffy clouds will be below you hovering over the lake. Take the whole 80 mile drive around the perimeter of the lake. There are spots on the south side where the water is an incredible emerald green turning to blue further out into the lake. If it's still there, take the paddlewheel cruise boat around sunset. When I was there it had good food and drinks and entertainment and some beautiful views of the sun setting in the mountains above the lake. Mark Twain called Lake Tahoe the most beautiful spot on earth. It's the prettiest spot I have ever seen in the US, Canada and Mexico. I've never been abroad. Google Lake Tahoe images and you will get lots more examples of great shots at the lake. This time of year be prepared for crazy weather, it can range from warm sunshine to snow and wind within a couple of hours. Bring a warm jacket wherever you go.

I lived there - State Line CA -- as a child. I recommend taking the Heavenly Valley chair lift (yes it runs in the off-season). The views at the top of the ski mountain are spectacular.

Emerald Bay is worth the side trip.

The resort we stayed at gave use a CD to use that gives you a tour around the lake. Many suggestions where to stop to view and places to eat. My wife and I had a blast.

Take a drive over to fallen leaf Lake, and Angora lake. Take a drive over Kingsbury hwy 207 and one up Echo summit Hwy 50. Don't miss Sand harbor on the Northeast side of the lake. Cave Rock is another nice place for a sunset.

I wonder if Chamber's Lodge and Meek's Bay are still there??? I should think so! Many beautiful memories of Lake Tahoe from 1952.

I think you'll be OK in early May but not much later. I was there last September and there were so many people I almost couldn't find a place to park my motorcycle. And then getting to the scenic area was almost impossible due to the crowds or really obnoxious tourists. Also the construction was bad as earlier mentioned and traffic slowed everything down.

Having said that I'd just recommend driving around the lake and stopping where ever you see a good scene--there are lots of them. This is one place (also like Crater Lake in Oregon) where having both wide angle and telephoto is a good idea as the scenery is wonderful but shooting some of the islands and boats and beaches also provides great opportunities. Should be fun.
