In the fifties when I'd go downtown quite often there would be a man who was legless sitting on what I think was a mechanics rolling platform....one you'd lay on to go under a car. He propel himself by his hands. He'd find a spot and sell pencils. I'd always buy one and give him a quarter. He was probably a WWII or Korean Vet. Thinking back, I wish I'd given him more.
