Yes. I agree on the multiple batteries.

I would leave the computer home but I will be on the island for 2 weeks doing various wildlife viewing. I carry a 1 TB portable HD to download all my photos. I think for 2 weeks I would have to buy many cards.

I did 2 weeks in the Himalayas. Brought extra batteries. That’s it. Extras weigh you down. I swear, 30 pounds of camera gear weighs 100 after 60 miles of up and down.. nothing’s level in those mountains.

I minimized everything. Lots of photos though.

Not even any roads out there. No bus, cars. Nothing. Trail, villages. It’s on your back or it stays home.

Hello everyone! I have been following your posts for a few months and have learned enough to know, I have a lot to learn! I will be going on a trip to Vancouver Island and will be without electricity for 3 days on a kayaking trip to view Orca whales. Do you have suggestions for not having electricity? Have any of you used alternate portable electricity devices to recharge your camera (yes, I will have more than 1 battery with me) and download to a laptop? Also, because I have learned to shoot RAW, how many cards would you suggest? I will have more simple questions in another post but one step at a time. BTW- Thank you for all the knowledge you have shared on here. I have learned from reading your posts that the best answers come from those that are experienced.

Angmo, you are braver than I. How was the weather? "..if it's not on your back, it stays home." Love that! BUT thank God, I will only be away from my car for 3 days. I think I am doing well for a 2 week trip and only taking 1 suitcase! I carry my camera and electronics. I bet you took some phenomenal photos!

They're not really cheap, but they're lifesavers. A couple of those and two or three spare batteries ought to last for the time you're away from a source of electricity. Your camera's battery is good for 440 shots, so unless you like to do a lot of burst shots, that's a lot of shooting available. You should be able to get several charges out of these portable chargers.

Weather was great. Some rain for 2 days. Would have been warmer if it snowed on those days. Kinda dangerous there too. But I met plenty of others on the trails. Really have a desire to return. Must be all the extra gravity.

Did tents the whole way.

Pack your suitcase and then remove half. You don’t need the stuff you take out. That’s the truth.

Whenever, wherever I go, I have at least a dozen cards on me ( I can easily fill a 128 GB card in an afternoon, so I'm prepared)!

First, and foremost: Weight! I get to go on a 61-mile canoe trip every couple of years, and have learned to limit myself to one DSLR, two lenses, and four fully charged batteries. I also include five 32-mb SD cards—usually I could get by with three, but they are relatively cheap, and weigh nothing. I also keep an Olympus P&S that’s waterproof for shots I’m not comfortable subjecting the DSLR to potential oopsies into Davey Jone’s locker.

Your dry-bag will be your new best friend. I would suggest as small of a camera bag as you can justify (cleaning equip needs to be in there) and separate smaller dry bag just for your camera bag for quick access. I keep my cards in a waterproof case, also. Oh yeah, I change cards daily—just in case the camera hits the drink I still have the previous day(s) shots.

One thing I’ve learned; unless the trip is a designated photo safari, or your along strictly to document the trip with your camera, don’t let trying to shoot everything get in the way of having fun. I’ve been on a few fun trips where I had a preset idea of how I was going to design a slideshow afterwards. I would get so wrapped-up in trying to “shoot everything” that later I realized I spent so much time trying to get just the right shots that I didn’t really have that much fun. Trust me, where you’re going there will be hundreds of postcard shots. You probably won’t have to work to hard to get numerous “wall hangers.” So, Enjoy yourself, and let your resulting photos reflect that.

Oh yeah: Weight!

When away from electrikery for my camera, phone and camera, I'll take along one of these, http://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/18v-one-usb-power-adapter, with one or two spare batteries. I use their tools and lights as well so not a big expense. So its really for the phone, as I'll have enough camera batteries and can do without the laptop with a few cards.

They make solar cell charges. These probably will cost you a pretty penny but they will charge your batteries full in sunlight and partially under cloudy skies.

Turn stuff of in your camera that you do not need. WIFI, LCD review, Bluetooth, etc. Before you go do a practice short with fully charged batteries. Shoot until the battery light comes on. How many photos did you get, that should get you half way to your answers.
