I can't get to Nikon transfer to download new photos, been having trouble before but now - nothing.
Both of my computers don't recognize the 700.
Any suggestions appreciated

I wonder if your cable is at fault?
Unplug the SD card, insert it in a USB card reader on your computer. That is the only reliable way.

Thanks for your reply, the cable was my first guess, it's a mini USB, I have another one and tried it, same thing happened.
Are there any differences to the cables.

Thank You Sir,
But the "un-reliable" way has been working just fine since I have had the camera (8+ years)
Don't know anything about what you suggested.

Try and remove the "SD" card from the cam and put the "SD" card into a reader and put it to your computer's usb port. See if that works...if not...it's your "SD" card.
....but...I still think it's the cable. That's all I can think of. Best of luck! Even though you have had the cam for 8 years....the cable could be just worn out.
FYI: the Nikon D700 uses a Compact Flash (CF) card.

Thanks again, one for your civil reply and, are all the mini USB cables the same?

No, all USB cables are not the same. But even if the cables are fine, the cameras USB output port could be damaged or failed. The only way to tell is to get a CF card reader and try to download to the computer that way.

Apparently lots of posters are unfamiliar with the D700 but feel the need to post incorrect info anyway. Thats getting much more common these days.
If you can still view the photos on the view screen after trying to d/l, then the card is good. The failure to read the camera strongly suggests it's the cord or camera.
Check inside the USB ports on the camera and computer to see if there is any obstruction inside the port. Since many of these cords are cheap, they do break quite easily. Buy a new one at WalMart for <$5.00. If that doesn't work then start thinking of professional help.

This is a "Mini" USB, as someone asked, all the pictures are on the card.
I would of replied earlier but World's Men's Curling was on the tube, big thing up here, like your NCAA bball.
Here's how I would down load my pictures, plug the camera in, when Nikon Transfer appears the primary destination would be my Toshiba external hard (1 tb) drive, secondary location a flash drive - Lexar 6 to 12 gb then I'd fill up a DVD-RW. All these transfers are NEF. Edit images on another hard drive
The camera had been getting slower on the downloads, so I tried another USB mini cord and got no improvement.
The CF card is Sandisk Extreme III 2.0 GB
Any suggestions, ideas, or any kinda help would be welcomed, need more info, I'll do my best to get it to you.
Thanks All

Do you have another computer/laptop you can try it with or perhaps a friend's machine to see if you have the same issues?
I have always put my CF cards (D300 & D4s) directly into the slot in the computer. A number of weeks ago all the cards started giving me the "format card" message. I pulled a usb card reader out of the closet and all is good again. I wonder if a Windows update did something to screw it up.
