For our 35th wedding anniversary we are taking a 2 week tour of Italy in October. I currently shoot with a D5300 but would appreciate any advice as to using this indoors in low light flash prohibited settings. I have the 35mm f/2 DX lens..or should I be looking into upgrading the body?
Thanks

Consider the Nikon D500. Outstanding in low light. Happy 35th in October.

In my opinion, the d5300 is a nice camera if you have lots of light to work with, but if you need to boost the ISO, it does not fare well. You may want to look into the d500, it handles higher ISO much better than any other dx camera body that i have tried. Have a nice anniversary tour and congratulations on your 35th.

Thanks for your input? Would the D7500 be a lower cost alternative?

You have an excellent camera.
Perhaps as a suggestion, rather than waiting to arrive at the destination, that you put the 35mm f/2 DX lens on your D5300 and go to darker lit interiors (Local Catholic church for example) and take non-flash photos. Then you will know ahead of time then if it works for you or not.
All can sit here and pontificate and speculate but only you know what works and is acceptable to you.
So do the simple test, 10 minutes at most and you will know.

Best suggestion and worth the investment of 10 minutes before spending $1800 for a new camera!

Excellent advice, I do not know why that did not occur to me.

You are welcome.
Then when you get back post a few shots from there.

Happy to do so. Looks a though I may have preempted a GAS attack. Thanks

Your D5300 with 24 megapixels and flip screen is just fine. You just need the proper lenses to match. Yes, the D500 is a better low light camera. But costly too. I own the Nikon DX version 35mm and the Nikon 50mm f1.8 lenses. I love both of those inexpensive lenses. I'm looking forward to owning the Tamron 18-400mm that is presently priced at $649. That lens is selling faster than hotcakes. Take an inexpensive spare pocket camera as a backup. Sony is your best option, but the cheaper versions only shoot JPEG. Happy 35th Anniversary.

What other lenses do you have?
35mm is not a wide angle on your camera.
I would want something at least 18mm or wider.
The Tokina 11-20 2.8 has gotten great reviews here.
Nikon's new 10-20 AF-P is also making some waves.
Not a very wide aperture, but the VR should help a bit.

Your 35mm lens should be fine for most inside shots. You may want to find a fast 18 or 20mm to compliment it and a moderate telezoom for outdoos shots, but those would be ancillary.

Good luck and enjoy.

I also have the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 DX as well.
