Nice! I have not yet learned how to get such sharpness with my D7000 and 70-300, even being much closer and not at full zoom. Heck, I can't even get anything to look that sharp in the viewfinder with tripod and manual focus. Perhaps my tired old eyes just don't see that well anymore, but I'll keep trying.

Try using Aperture priority & a a higher ISO ... that may give you a fast shutter speed 1/1000 or higher. I am getting much sharper pictures by doing that lately in the lower light overcast winter days....on bright sunny days I am trying to still have a high shutter speed it helps my shakier hands. I use my tripod as much as possible.

Thanks Mustanger, I try to shoot birds when light is fairly bright, but mostly use shutter speeds around 1/400 or so. I will try your suggestions, and many thanks. Back in my film days I had a Pentax spotmatic and a 1.2 lens so shoot much at lower speeds.
