I was watching the coverage of President Trump in Florida today and almost could not hear what was being said over the incessant loud clattering of the cameras. One would think that since almost all cameras in use today are digital, it would be possible to create an electronic shutter that was noiseless.

The Olympus OMD EM1 Mark II has a noiseless shutter.

Many current cameras from Fujifilm have electronic shutters and a series of options to help eliminate shutter noise.

Most of the noise is caused by DSLR cameras and their slapping mirrors. And poor microphone setup is probably also to blame for camera clatter drowning out the speech.

So why don't the photographers lock up the mirrors and use the screen to aim?

Because what you describe is not really a problem.

I guess you like hearing the clatter. I find it distracting even when it doesn't overwhelm the dialogue.

1Laughtrack sounds added to impress the TV audience starting in 1950. Like the poof of flash bulbs were also added to movies... Flash bulbs were silent. Like movies with background noise added... silence is not golden. Trump being a PTBarnium guy may well have the clicks added to his sound system for effect; like the moans in a porn film... [so I have been told by the Baptist Church film review board [joke]] Camera Clatter is the laugh track of press conferences. Trump has a sound engineer ... surly.

Or Shirley, unless she signed an NDA or a 'capture and kill' agreement.
