Trip to San Antonio,TX.
I will be spending a ten days in the San Antonio area in mid April. I am going to be very limited on camera gear to take along. I will be taking my Sony A77 for the body and I am thinking of just taking my Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens. I used this combo on a trip to Maine a few years ago and captured 90% of my photos with it. It is a extremely sharp lens and I love the speed. My other options are a 24-105 4.5-6.3 or 18-200 4.5-6.3 Any thoughts appreciated.

I used my 24-105 for most of the time I was there but found my 100-300 was also a bonus for walks around some parkland along the river where there were a lot of different birds and animals that were too far for the 105. I had a crop Canon 10D. If one lens is desired then the 18-200 would be a good choice to use.
Depending on the timing, do the Hill Country for the enormous fields of wildflowers...bluebonnets and all the rest. If you miss the wildflowers, visit the wineries and also find some Texas BBQ (brisket).
Really appreciate this info. Pretty well covers all of my interests.

I can't give you advice about lenses (I am a beginner), but if you are in the Hill Country and near Fredericksburg, you may want to take the Willow City Loop, not far out of Fredericksburg. It's a beautiful side excursion and well worth the time, but I would ask some of the locals if it's peak time for the bluebonnets before driving out there. Also, Wild Seed Farms near Fredericksburg may have fields of various types of wildflowers (they grow them and sell the seeds). Again, call them to see what's in bloom. Enchanted Rock State Park is also in the area-great for hiking and beautiful views once you get to the top of the rock. You can google any of these for more info. Have fun!
In San Antonio:
El Mercado
the Riverside walk and boat rides
And up the hill from the riverside walk is La Villita..many shops of a variety of sorts, several exc3llent art galleries.
The Alamo
Museum of native american cultures (I may not have name quite right, but ask for it and any local will know what you are looking for)
S.A. is an amazing place for photo ops!
Dave
Thanks everyone, really appreciate the info.
Mid April will still be good for flowers, maybe not so many Bluebonnets, although lots of reds and yellows will abound. The Riverwalk and the Alamo are very nice if you are downtown... you may also be there the first part of Fiesta which is fun if you have never been.

My family visited friends in San Antonio some years ago. Their RiverWalk and The Alamo are well worth seeing; I believe we also went to a mission in the area, but l'm not sure which one, and we attended a rodeo. I did it all with a 28-80mm lens on a 35mm camera; your lens is similar in view to that.

I just returned yesterday from several days in San Antonio. Most of my shooting was at the various missions on the south side of town. I used my 16-35mm/f4 on a FF camera and it was the absolutely perfect lens for those shots, both interior and exterior.

The Alamo, Mission Conception, San Fernando Cathedral and the Riverwalk to name a few sites. Used a 24-70 and that was all I needed.
Reckon that settles it. I think the 17-50 will do what I want. Will be shooting mainly Missions, Alamo and the Riverwalk. No doubt will have the 18-200 with just in case.
