I’ve just booked a trip to York for this summer, about ten days. Anybody have suggestions for camera-friendly day trips? We’ll have lots a free time, and would like to find photo ops in the Yorkshire area. Preferably without the tourist hordes. We’re going to spend a day around Whitby (with the tourist hordes), but would really like to get as far away from tour buses as possible. I’m guessing some of you have favorite spots in the region. Thanks in advance for your help.

Within York, people are always plentiful. But check out Shambles, an amazing old street within the city.

You must visit the National Rail Museum and the Cathedral in the city, and York is on the main Edinburgh to London rail line, so you could take a short trip up to Durham city (where I was today) to marvel at its huge Gothic Cathedral and Castle . Of course if money is no object you could travel up to Edinburgh or down to London. If you hire a car there are numerous castles and ruined Abbeys (Fountains Abbey near the small Cathedral city of Ripon is a must) and Brimham Rock formations also near Ripon.Wherever you go,I hope the weather is kind for you and I hope you enjoy your trip.

I just wrote down your suggestions for future use. I don't know if we're heading over the Pond this autumn but if we do, Husband wants to make it down to York.

It will be quieter in Autumn Sue, in the summer it is a tourist honey pot.

Not only quieter, but B&B costs are lower, and the weather is cooler. Plus, in September our summer activities are over and the autumn ones haven't quite begun. September is a great month for us to come visiting!

Plenty of opportunity to get away from the hordes ! If York is your base, and you have a car, you can easily get to the following where you can explore to your heart's delight .........

It's possible to walk around most of the core/centre of the city on top of the old defensive wall which makes an excellent vantage point for photography amongst other things. It will get busy but realistic for picture taking if you go early/late. There are plenty of opportunities for boat trips which again give you good, uncluttered vantage points for photography. I am a waterways photographer and regularly visit my mother in York and am never short of picture opportunities where boats and the river are concerned!

York and Durham Cathedrals are both good to see. Get to these to as soon after 9 am to avoid crowds. To visit Durham Cathedral you will need a permit. As you will be taking images for educational purposes they will charge you £15. You will be given a sash to wear and the virgers will give you every assistance to get your shots. Well worth the cost and the time. Email them before you go. Staiths is a very nice harbour, just up from Scarbrough. Scugdale in North West Yorkshire is another place for photographs. The crag and the view down the valley is lovely. It is just off the A172 road. Really the photographic oportunities go on forever.

Be sure to tour the Viking ruins. They were discovered when they were digging the foundation for a new building in the old part of the city.

Yorkshire is a great place to holiday, just up from Whitby you have Staithes, and Robin Hoods Bay beautiful, quaint fishing villages, it does attract tourists, there are no cars allowed so you have to walk down to it and then up which is a bit of a climb. Some beautiful little non touristy villages all around there. Goathland with its famous steam railway, in my mind, is a must. Catch the train and, lots of shots, travel to Pickering, a few tourists but again a lovely way to spend some free time, when you get back on the train you can go all the way back to Whitby on it, a great experience. The whole area is a magnet to tourists but it is very possible to travel to lots of little villages that are quiet and peaceful to sit and while away a couple of hours. Ask the locals when you arrive at different places, I find they are a wealth of information. Have a great time in York it is wonderful.

The York Minster. If you are familiar with Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth, this cathedral is an excellent example of what is described in the book.
