I just watched a Youtube video on using control points in Viveza which supposedly explains them and the instructor states that the same ideas are applicable to the other Nik applications. I think I’d have to watch a few others to get it through my thick head but it does help explain them. You can view it here: https://youtu.be/5_1vQlNMarg

That was very handy , lightroom does things more globally but this seems to pick similar tones.

Yes, I downloaded Nik when it first became a free download and have used various modules, mostly the Color Efex Pro module but used it more globally. I think I need to really study more and see what all it can do. It apparently is much more useful than I had thought.

One of the instructors at Immaging USA 2018 said NIK filters had been purchased from google. If correct, this might mean updates...

I had read a rumor here on UHH a while back that Nik was going to be updated at some future time. The question might be - what will that mean for those of us who downloaded the free version? Will those be updated for free, or will new updates need to be purchased?

Thats kind of the problem , currently. If you click on the help button in a module it takes you to a page that doesn't help, and tells you on1 are the new owners and will be releasing something later. Thats why when I found those shortcuts I posted them here.

I doubt on1 bought nik from google in order to give it away for free, although it was the control point that they wanted really.
It's hard to imagine they will see working on a free product as a priority, if they charge for it people will grumble ...

On the positive side On1 has given away older versions of their software, when new versions have been released. They did it with version 8 and then when they were turning the license servers off for 8 they gave a free upgrade to version 10. You can't complain about that :)

I don't think Nik is a dead end but I have no clue as to what comes next or when.

DxO is Nik's newest owner:

https://nikcollection.dxo.com/

Regarding control points, if you are using a host such as PS or PS Elements, creating a layer mask after your Nik edit can be easier, especially if you are just doing an opacity adjustment to a small section. Be sure to create each Nik edit on a separate layer for best control.

There are still tons of videos and articles on the web for Nik tutorials! Just ask Mr Google

I was able to still get a free version on Sunday via the DxO link. I originally paid $250 for the suite prior to Google's purchase and subsequent free sharing, and have enjoyed it tremendously for four years. I will be happy to buy it from DxO if "reasonable" - especially if they include new goodies

Do the help buttons work on your DX0 versions? I only ask because the nik ones don't lead to help any more just to the nik has been bought by ... page instead.

I'm not on the right computer; will fire it up and check it out in an hour or so. I'm curious too!

OK, I was able to check. The help buttons go to a page that looks like maybe it's going be activated after DxO releases a new version. The page itself says "results not found" but the url path includes nikcollection.dxo.com/help/

I found a series of nik tutorials and i'll link to the 2nd one since the first one is installing nik.

He does manage to get you thinking you should be using this but at the same time he is incredibly annoying particularly so for the first minute. So feel free to skip that first minute of each video.

I'm kind of conflicted as he does a fair job of explaining things, yet ...
