WOW! Brent. Another great set. Most that have chosen a favorite have picked #9 but I am partial to #8. #2 would be my next choice. Now I can't wait to get down to Cocoa to see what I can capture. That new lens seems to be working nicely.

Jan, I can hardly wait to see the photos you come up with from Cocoa Beach. I'm glad that my photos can inspire you and get you all excited!
Yes, the new lens is a Keeper for sure. It just raised the bar for my photography by a noticable notch! Are you a Canon girl or Nikon girl or another brand?

Larry, you like #9 along with several other UHH members here. I wasn't sure how that one would be responded to. I guess more people liked it than I figured! Maybe because it is kind of different?!?!? Thanks Larry for saying the images are beautiful. I must give some of the credit to my new telephoto lens. It's AWESOME!

Another great set, especially like 7 for the spray and composition. Congrats on your new lens. Question? How do you stabilize your camera and which way do you like or use the most? tripod, monopod, pier railing, hand held or? Would be most interested in your reply. Keep shooting those great shots.

Yeah One Rude Dawg, #7 is probably my favorite one too. I'm a sucker for ocean spray! Thanks for the congrats on the new lens. I will keep shooting the great shots, I promise, especially since I have this awesome lens now! lol
How do I stabilize my camera? I shoot at 1000th of a sec so I don't need to shoot with a tripod, pier railing or monopod. Often times the surfing action happens so quickly that the photographer really needs to be very quick. I always shoot in what I call "machine gun mode". My camera body shoots at 4 1/2 FPS which is perfect in my opinion. If I had a camera body that shot at 10 FPS then it would be to many shots in my opinion. Not necessary. So, to answer your question, I hand hold the camera.

I got this lens about 8-9 months ago and love it too. All of my friends that had the 150-600mm Tamrons have switched over to the Canon 100-400 Mark II. It is such a sharp lens. I had the older 100-400 a few years ago and the new Mark II puts it to shame.

Jeep_daddy, you know exactly what I am talking about then since you own one. I was one of those photographers that also had one of the Tamron 150-600mm lenses up until last week when I sold it right here on UHH. It was a very nice lens and I got lots of really nice surfing shots, but in comparison to the new lens, even though it was a lot of money (twice as much as the Tamron) it has been a good move and I am very happy. Here are the differences between the Mark I and the Mark II that we have:

Improved optical design with 21 elements in 16 groups (versus 17 in 14 for Mk I)
Upgraded image stabilization with 4-stops benefit (vs. 2-stops)
Twist-ring zoom control (vs. push-pull)
Extensive weather-resistant seals (vs. partly sealed)
Faster USM autofocus drive
Close focusing down to 98cm, 0.31x magnification at max focal length (vs. 180cm, 0.2x)
Same size as Mk I, though slightly heavier at 1570g (vs. 1380g)

Excellent shots all. I was particularly drawn to number 7 and 9. The water spray of number 7 and the color contrast in 9 (surfers suit versus the boiling white foam).

In number 10 I was drawn to the illusion that the surfer was standing on something under the water while trying to climb on the surf board. The something solid must have been a current under the water in the wave to create the subsurface semi-solid illusion. I guess it is the Mechanical Engineer working in Fluid Mechanics that makes me see things like that.

Thanks lwiley for saying all the shots are excellent.
Let me explain a little more about photo #10: The surfer is doing what is called a "kick out". That is always at the end of the wave and the surfer tries to spin his board around to be facing out to sea so he or she can start paddling out to the lineup for the next wave. Usually the surfer will turn the board and put a lot of pressure on the tail of the board to kind of stall out. That is exactly what that surfer is doing. As far as the water current goes.....it was kind of choppy conditions out there when I shot this photo. That might be what you are seeing. Thanks lwiley for checking in!
